Dem Rep. Slams Trump’s Iran Threats as ‘Disgusting’
Representative Adam Smith voiced grave concerns over President Trump's threats against Iran, labeling them 'disgusting' and damaging to America's global standing. He urged Congress to curb presidential power and questioned the strategic goals and potential for war crimes associated with targeting civilian infrastructure.
Dem Lawmaker Calls Trump’s Iran Threats ‘Disgusting,’ Urges Congress to Act
WASHINGTON D.C. – A leading Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee has strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s recent threats regarding Iran, calling the language and approach to the conflict “disgusting” and “morally bankrupt.” Representative Adam Smith, the committee’s ranking member, expressed deep concern over the potential consequences of Trump’s rhetoric and actions, stating that the damage to America’s global standing is already significant.
Rhetoric Fuels Global Distrust, Damages U.S. Reputation
“The language he has used, the way he has approached this conflict, his complete lack of concern for all of the costs of the war, the people being killed, the wild and insulting rhetoric he is using,” Smith said. “It has done such damage to the United States of America, to our place in the world.” He believes Trump’s “America alone” approach marks a departure from traditional foreign policy, suggesting it leaves the U.S. isolated and morally compromised on the world stage.
Smith argued that Trump’s words alone have inflicted substantial harm on the nation’s reputation, comparing the damage to that seen since the end of World War II. He stressed that even without military action, the president’s statements have eroded international trust and respect for the United States. “Regardless of what happens at this point, what Trump has done to date has done an enormous amount of damage,” he stated.
Call for Congressional Restraint on Presidential Power
The congressman voiced a sense of urgency for Congress to take action, emphasizing the need to rein in presidential authority. “It is time for Congress to figure out every day how can we rein in Trump’s power,” Smith urged. “He is clearly unfit to lead this country.” He pointed to a missed opportunity after January 6th for Republicans to hold Trump accountable, suggesting the party bears significant responsibility for allowing the situation to escalate.
Smith expressed pessimism about Republicans changing their stance, indicating that the path forward likely involves voters holding them accountable at the polls. “We can hope that they change their mind and see how terrible this has been on so many levels. I can’t say that I’m optimistic,” he admitted. “I think we’re going to have to go straight to the voters to hold the Republicans accountable who have allowed Donald Trump to do all the damage that he has done.”
Questioning the Strategy Behind Military Threats
Regarding the specific military threats, Smith questioned the strategic goals and potential outcomes. He noted that even a significant bombing campaign, as suggested by Trump’s comments about potentially decimating a country in hours, would not necessarily achieve a decisive military victory or eliminate Iran’s capability to threaten regional stability.
“No, you can’t destroy a civilization. You can’t even destroy a country’s military capability with a four-hour bombing campaign,” Smith explained. “So the cluelessness of what he thinks this is going to accomplish militarily is another problem.” He highlighted that Iran would likely still possess the means to threaten vital shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting the proposed actions might not even achieve their stated strategic objectives.
Concerns Over War Crimes and Civilian Casualties
Smith expressed particular alarm about the possibility of targeting civilian infrastructure, citing reports that the Pentagon might be considering expanding its list of targets to include energy sites that provide power to both civilians and the military. He called this prospect “deeply worried” and something he “basically share[s] everything that your previous panel said.”
He differentiated between legitimate military targets and broader attacks on civilian infrastructure. “In certain circumstances, if there’s a power grid that is directly powering a missile construction site… yes, those can be military targets,” Smith conceded. However, he strongly criticized the interpretation by some Republicans that hitting power plants or bridges connected to the military automatically justifies such actions, especially when the president’s rhetoric suggests a desire to punish the entire population.
“But that is not what the lunatic-in-chief has been saying,” Smith stated emphatically. “He has made it very clear that his plan has nothing to do with military targets. He wants to erase a civilization and punish the entire population of Iran.” He accused some lawmakers of willful ignorance for not acknowledging Trump’s stated intentions, which he believes involve targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Military Personnel Urged to Reject Illegal Orders
The congressman concluded by referencing the responsibility of military personnel to refuse unlawful orders. “This is why Mark Kelly and all those members of Congress went on TV to say, you don’t have to follow illegal orders. In fact, that you are not supposed to follow illegal orders for moments like this,” he said, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the potential for illegal actions.
Looking Ahead
As tensions remain high, the focus will likely continue to be on President Trump’s pronouncements and any subsequent military actions. The international community and members of Congress will be watching closely to see if Congress will indeed find ways to assert its oversight authority and prevent potentially devastating or illegal military engagements.
