Dem Rep. Gomez: Trump Was Never Truthful About Peace
California Congressman Jimmy Gomez criticized the Trump administration's handling of intelligence regarding Iran, stating the President was "never truthful" about his intentions. Democrats plan to force a vote on a War Powers resolution, arguing the recent military actions lacked justification and congressional approval.
Democrats Criticize Trump Administration’s Iran Strategy Amidst Congressional Briefings
Washington D.C. – As the Trump administration prepares to brief congressional staff on key committees today, Democrats are voicing strong criticism regarding the President’s long-term strategy, particularly concerning operations in Iran. California Congressman Jimmy Gomez, a member of both the House Intelligence and Ways and Means Committees, argued that the administration has been misleading the public about the intelligence surrounding Iran’s nuclear capabilities and that the recent actions constitute an unnecessary escalation.
Questions Linger Over Intelligence and Justification for Military Action
Gomez expressed frustration that the briefings are only occurring after military action has been taken. “We have a lot of questions, but they should have started this months ago, not after they had already taken their action,” he stated. The Congressman highlighted perceived inconsistencies in the administration’s messaging regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He recalled that in March, the Director of National Intelligence stated Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons, followed by reports of bombings on uranium enrichment facilities in June. The administration then claimed these facilities were obliterated, only for a subsequent report to suggest the program was only set back by a few months.
“So now today, all of a sudden, they’re an imminent threat? So I want to learn, I want to know exactly what their intelligence was. Because a lot of the intelligence that we’ve heard of in bits and pieces through the news is that it wasn’t true, that either he was lying in June or he’s lying today.”
Gomez further alleged that the administration has limited the intelligence shared with Congress, making accountability difficult. “This is an administration that doesn’t want to be held accountable to Congress or to the American public,” he asserted.
War Powers Resolution and Democratic Leverage
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has indicated that Democrats will force a vote on a War Powers resolution upon Congress’s return to Washington this week. Many Democrats deem the recent operations in Iran illegal and argue the administration failed to adequately justify the strikes or outline a post-operation plan. Congressman Gomez confirmed his intention to vote for the resolution, labeling the action a “war of choice” that was “not necessary.”
He pointed to the Department of Defense’s own assessments suggesting Iran was nearly a decade away from intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities. “As long as the Republicans don’t care about their own constituents, don’t respect the authority of Congress and only capitulate to the president, the president is going to continue operating outside the bounds of the law and the Constitution,” Gomez stated, emphasizing the need for Congress to utilize its constitutional powers, including through budget measures, to hold the administration accountable.
Trump’s Shift from “Peacetime President” to Military Hawk
Gomez challenged President Trump’s self-portrayal as a peacetime president who campaigned on an “America First” platform. He noted that Trump has launched military operations in at least seven countries. Recent polling indicates that nearly half of Americans oppose military action in Iran, and almost three-quarters believe Trump needs congressional approval. Gomez argued that Trump’s shift towards military engagement contradicts his past criticisms of previous administrations for engaging in costly foreign wars.
“I think that, one, he was never truthful about who he was. If he was, he wouldn’t engage in these wars.”
The Congressman suggested that Trump might be seeking a “rally around the flag effect” to boost his declining public support. However, he warned that such actions endanger American service members and could lead to further casualties and long-term injuries, including traumatic brain injuries.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming vote on the War Powers resolution will be a significant test of congressional authority against executive action. As Democrats continue to push for greater transparency and accountability, the effectiveness of their legislative tools and the willingness of Republicans to challenge the President will be crucial in shaping U.S. foreign policy and military engagement moving forward.
