Dem Congressman Slams Iran War “Joke” Deal

Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, sharply criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the conflict with Iran, calling recent claims of victory a “joke.” Moulton expressed deep skepticism about a recently negotiated two-week ceasefire, arguing it does not serve U.S. interests and leaves the nation in a weaker position.

Ceasefire Deal Raises Concerns

Moulton stated he is not confident the current ceasefire deal will hold, highlighting significant concessions Iran has made that the U.S. administration appears unwilling to reciprocate. While acknowledging the ceasefire is preferable to ongoing conflict, he pointed out that a similar pause in fighting existed before President Trump initiated what Moulton called a “war of choice.” He questioned the terms of the deal, particularly Iran’s refusal to make nuclear concessions and the lack of restrictions on its ballistic missile program.

“We also have no curbs on their ballistic missiles, so while we destroyed a bunch of them in the course of this conflict, they’ve also been using them quite effectively against our allies projecting power in ways they never have before.”

The congressman also raised alarms about Iran’s potential control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane. He noted that oil prices have nearly doubled since the conflict began. Moulton found it “comical” that anyone, especially Fox News host Pete Hegseth, could claim victory in the war, calling such statements “absurd.” He stressed that the only viable endgame for such conflicts is a negotiated agreement, and while the ceasefire is a step in that direction, its long-term success is uncertain.

Trust Eroded, Hardliners Empowered

Moulton argued that the Iranians cannot trust the Trump administration. He cited the U.S. withdrawal from a previous nuclear deal negotiated under President Obama and President Trump’s decision to bomb Iran after previous negotiations. This lack of trust, he believes, has empowered hardliners within Iran and led to the installation of a new leader who is less likely to engage with the West and potentially more inclined to pursue nuclear weapons. Moulton added that actions taken against the immediate family of this new leader have further worsened the situation.

The congressman believes the U.S. is now in a worse strategic position with less leverage over Iran than when the conflict started. He also pointed to the broader international implications, suggesting that the U.S. credibility has been damaged, sending a concerning message to countries like China, which is closely watching the situation regarding Taiwan. The expenditure of U.S. munitions in the Iran conflict, which could have been used for deterrence elsewhere, further weakens the nation’s global standing, according to Moulton.

GOP Critics Likely to Remain Silent

Addressing the political fallout, Moulton predicted that most Republican critics of President Trump will likely remain quiet for now. He suggested they will attempt to frame the ceasefire as a victory, similar to how Hegseth presented it. Moulton acknowledged that while the administration’s actions have not led to a clear win, the current focus is on securing the ceasefire and preventing a wider conflict or the deployment of ground troops. He stated that avoiding the costly and dangerous options of taking over Iran or forcibly controlling the Strait of Hormuz means reinforcing the ceasefire is the best path forward.

Moulton concluded by emphasizing the need to work towards making the current ceasefire a permanent peace, despite the administration’s perceived missteps. He reiterated that the current situation leaves the U.S. in a more vulnerable position, with adversaries around the globe taking note of the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict.
