Dem Lawmaker Vows to Tackle Trump Administration Corruption

Virginia Congressman Suha Subramaniam, a member of the House Oversight Committee, has outlined his top priorities should Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives. His agenda focuses heavily on investigating alleged corruption within the Trump administration, particularly concerning business dealings by Jared Kushner and the conduct of agencies under presidential direction.

Concerns Over Nominee’s Loyalty and DHS Actions

Subramaniam expressed strong disapproval of Senator Mark Wayne Mullin’s nomination for Secretary of Homeland Security. Mullin’s response to a question about whether he would follow unlawful orders from the President raised significant red flags for the Congressman. “That answer alone is disqualifying,” Subramaniam stated. He fears Mullin, if confirmed, would oversee illegal activities by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The Congressman cited past instances where DHS allegedly carried out illegal actions under presidential direction. These include the deportation of individuals without due process and the potential deployment of ICE agents to voting locations. Subramaniam emphasized the need for the Secretary of Homeland Security to refuse such unlawful directives. “He needs to be able to say no, and he’s not willing to, it looks like,” he added.

Jared Kushner’s Business Dealings Under Scrutiny

A significant portion of Subramaniam’s focus is on Jared Kushner’s business activities while serving as a presidential envoy. Reports indicate Kushner sought billions from Middle Eastern governments for his private equity fund. This occurred while he was involved in sensitive foreign policy discussions, including the war on Iran, with a small group of advisors close to President Trump.

Congressman Robert Garcia and Senator Ron Wyden have already sent letters to the White House demanding answers about these dealings. Subramaniam believes this situation suggests that American foreign policy may be for sale. “Our foreign policy is for sale,” he declared. “And if you just send money to the Trump family, you send money to Trump’s allies, you can buy our foreign policy.” He criticized the lack of thorough investigation into these transactions, including cryptocurrency payments.

Oversight Committee’s Role and Future Investigations

Subramaniam stated that if Democrats gain the majority, investigating self-dealing within the Trump family and across all agencies will be a primary focus. He accused the current Republican leadership on the Oversight Committee of obstructing investigations. “The Republicans have been running interference for the Trump administration for too long now, they need to stop,” he argued. “And so if we have the gavel, we are going to do the investigations that they should have been doing all along.”

While acknowledging the importance of addressing everyday concerns like the economy and healthcare costs, Subramaniam sees these issues as directly linked to oversight. He believes that actions abroad that harm Americans or enrich the Trump family directly impact citizens’ daily lives. “They need to know the corruption that’s happening in this administration and that’s affecting their everyday lives,” he asserted.

Call for Proactive Oversight

The Congressman stressed the urgency of these investigations, suggesting that Democrats should not wait until after the election to begin their work. He indicated that efforts would be made to conduct preliminary investigations and prepare for the use of subpoena power if the Democrats win. “We’re going to try to do some of the work on our own as best we can,” he said, “and we’re certainly going to set up, set ourselves up for a position when we do have the subpoena power to do that.”

Subramaniam also touched upon the need for public hearings regarding ongoing conflicts. He noted that the ability to compel testimony and conduct such hearings often relies on the majority party’s willingness to issue subpoenas. The Congressman’s remarks highlight a clear intent to use oversight powers aggressively to uncover alleged wrongdoing within the Trump administration.
