March Madness Magic: Coach K Warns of Upset Alerts!
The madness has officially begun! March Madness is here, and legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, or Coach K, is giving us the inside scoop on what to watch for. He joined The Pat McAfee Show to break down the early tournament excitement and warn about potential upsets that could shake up your brackets.
Moments That Matter
Coach K kicked things off by emphasizing that March Madness is a “month of moments.” He pointed to early upsets, like Howard advancing, as proof that anything can happen. “Moments started last night with Howard, one of my guys advancing and the crying and whatever,” he said. The next few days promise non-stop action, with games running from noon to midnight across the country. Everyone will be glued to their brackets, trying to figure out who will advance.
Coach vs. Gambler: Different Approaches
While some focus on point spreads and betting lines, Coach K looks at the games themselves. “You study spreads. Bingo. You know, and I don’t study spreads. I just study games,” he explained. He stressed that when he predicts a team has a chance, it’s not about the betting odds. Pat McAfee highlighted this difference, saying, “You want to say I watch film. Uh, we’re just hoping and praying with the number that the sports books.” Coach K’s expertise is exactly what fans need to understand the real strategy behind the games.
The Pressure of Being a Favorite
For many teams, just making it into the tournament is a massive achievement that can change everything for their school’s reputation, enrollment, and attendance. However, Coach K pointed out that not all teams enter the tournament with the same goal. “There only so many teams that go into it wanting to win the whole thing,” he stated. Many teams are simply happy to be there, and winning one game is a huge success. This can lead to upsets because these teams play with “free credit,” meaning no pressure.
Coach K knows this feeling well. He recalled his own experiences, especially after winning his first title with Duke in 1991. “Did you have to talk to your teams about hey we’re playing against a team here probably that nothing to lose?” McAfee asked. Coach K confirmed, “Yeah, they are. Because if you’re that prohibitive favorite, you’re playing against a team that doesn’t feel any pressure. That means you better you you better pressure them.” He learned from legendary coach Bob Knight, who taught him to treat every game like a championship game. “Don’t assume that you’re going to be in the next game, no matter who you’re playing, and and approach each game as a championship game,” Coach K remembered.
Advantage: 11 Seeds?
The tournament’s opening play-in games have already shown their impact. Coach K agrees that teams winning these games, like the 11th seeds, might have an advantage in the first round. “I think the 11th seed in the playing game has an advantage,” he said. These teams are often from strong conferences, used to playing high-level games, and have already shaken off any opening-round nerves. They’ve also gained momentum by winning their way into the main bracket.
The Ball Debate
A quirky discussion arose about the basketballs themselves. Some noticed the balls seemed different, possibly overinflated, and wondered if it affected shooting. Coach K hadn’t heard about it but recalled a time in the ACC tournament when new balls were introduced. He believes it’s best for consistency if the NCAA tournament ball is used in conference tournaments beforehand. “Don’t they they need to be used. See, I think every conference tournament should use the whatever make a ball is used in the NCAA tournament,” he suggested.
Key Matchups to Watch
Looking ahead, Coach K highlighted several games he’s excited about. He’s interested in Johnny Dawkins’ Central Florida facing UCLA, especially if player Dent is healthy. He also pointed to fascinating matchups in the Midwest like Akron vs. Texas Tech and St. Louis vs. Georgia. In their region, TCU and Ohio State could be a great game, though Coach K leans towards Ohio State. He also mentioned potential second-round games like Wisconsin vs. Arkansas and Tennessee vs. Vandy, noting that both Arkansas and Vandy have players who could win their regions.
“I’m anxious to stay to to watch these and uh see what the hell happens,” Coach K concluded, ready to dive into the action. He plans to watch every game closely, studying them even more than the hosts. When asked if he’d ever publicly picked games before, he said no, as his focus was always solely on his own team’s performance during his coaching career.
