Candidate Styer Tackles California’s Crises Head-On
California gubernatorial candidate Tommy Styer outlines his plans to tackle affordability, homelessness, and the struggling entertainment industry. He advocates for quick housing solutions, streamlining building permits, and aggressive investment in entertainment.
Candidate Styer Tackles California’s Crises Head-On
The race for California governor is heating up, and candidate Tommy Styer is making his voice heard. He recently sat down to discuss the major issues facing the state, from serious allegations against a fellow candidate to the everyday struggles of affordability, homelessness, and the future of the entertainment industry.
Allegations and Integrity
The conversation began with the serious allegations against Congressman Eric Swalwell. Styer was clear in his stance: Swalwell should step down from both his congressional seat and the governor’s race. “The allegations are incredibly serious,” Styer stated, noting that a Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation is set to begin. He believes these circumstances make it impossible for Swalwell to continue his run for governor.
Beyond the specific allegations, Styer highlighted a broader concern about how women are treated in such situations. He expressed outrage at a system that can silence victims and make them fear for their careers. Styer applauded the women who have come forward, calling them brave for speaking out against what he described as extreme abuse. He sees a path forward where the system respects women and addresses such issues fairly.
Styer’s Campaign Priorities: Affordability First
With the political landscape shifting, Styer’s campaign appears to be gaining momentum. He outlined his campaign strategy, emphasizing hard work and direct engagement with Californians through town halls and a bus tour. His focus, he explained, is on the “bread and butter issues” that affect people’s daily lives.
Topping his list is affordability. “Things cost too much in California,” Styer said simply. He explained that many residents struggle to make ends meet at the end of the month. This lack of affordability, he believes, must be the top priority for any governor.
A New Approach to Homelessness
Homelessness remains a critical challenge for California. Styer offered a clear perspective: people don’t get better living on the streets. He pointed out that while some may start with mental health issues, the stress and danger of street life often worsen these problems over time.
His primary goal is to get people off the streets quickly and provide them with safe, immediate shelter. He criticized the current approach of focusing solely on permanent housing, which he says takes too long and costs too much. Instead, he advocates for emergency interim housing, like a room with a key, shared facilities, and crucial mental health support. “Getting people off the street is absolutely critical to getting people back into society,” he asserted.
This approach, he noted, is also vital for communities. Every neighborhood deserves to feel safe. His plan includes zoning for denser urban housing, making rent or mortgage payments more manageable. He envisions walkable cities with shorter commutes, where people can truly enjoy living.
Cutting Red Tape to Build More Housing
The difficulty of building in California is a major hurdle. Styer acknowledged the lengthy permit processes and regulations that developers face. He supports reforms to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to speed up permitting and reduce costs.
“We are overregulating in a way that is not coordinated and incredibly expensive,” he stated. He also pointed to zoning as a key area for reform, referencing recent legislation aimed at improving it. Beyond permits and zoning, Styer believes the state needs to embrace industrial construction methods. Building housing off-site and assembling it on-site can significantly lower costs, potentially by a third per square foot.
A significant obstacle, Styer explained, is that cities and counties often delay permits and impose high fees because they lack funding for essential services like education and healthcare for new residents. To address this, he proposes a special election to close a corporate real estate tax loophole. This, he estimates, could bring in $20 billion annually to local governments, turning unfunded mandates into funded ones and speeding up the building process.
Investing in the Entertainment Industry
The entertainment industry, a cornerstone of California’s economy, has been moving to other states and countries due to better incentives. Styer stressed that tax credits for this industry are not a cost but an investment that yields significant returns for the state.
“California invented the entertainment industry,” he reminded, emphasizing its historical importance. He supports aggressive tax credits and is willing to explore uncapped incentives, provided they are managed smartly. “We have to be more than competitive about tax credits,” he declared. He also wants to review regulations that might hinder productions, especially smaller ones.
Styer highlighted that this industry provides good, middle-class jobs for many, not just stars. He finds it infuriating that executives can receive huge bonuses while the industry struggles to stay in California. He is committed to fighting for this industry and ensuring it remains a vital part of the state’s future.
Defining Success
Looking ahead, Styer defined success for his first term. “Californians can afford to live in California again,” he said. He wants the state to continue to thrive, but with prosperity shared more evenly. His “Shared Prosperity Tour” reflects his commitment to ensuring working people benefit from the state’s wealth.
He envisions a California where working families can afford homes, provide good education for their children, and manage everyday costs. Styer wants to restore the California dream, building a future together where everyone shares in the state’s success.
