Cam Johnson Backs Hubert Davis Amid UNC Coaching Questions

UNC legend Cam Johnson is speaking out in support of current head coach Hubert Davis, offering a unique perspective shaped by his own experiences as a Tar Heel player. Davis was on staff as an assistant coach during Johnson’s time in Chapel Hill, and Johnson remembers Davis being a crucial part of his development, especially as he battled back from injuries.

“HD was on staff when I was in school and he was really vital for me just as his perspective,” Johnson stated. “He played 10 years in the league and you know, I had two hip surgeries going into my senior year.”

Johnson detailed how Davis was present every morning during his summer rehab, tailoring workouts to his specific needs. “Every morning over the summer, I’m doing my rehab and he’s right there in the gym with me, accommodating these workouts to my needs,” Johnson explained. “We’re doing ball handling when I’m sitting on a chair. We’re doing form shooting when I’m flatfoot and can’t and we’re developing these workouts.” This hands-on approach, even when Johnson could only shoot from a seated position, left a lasting impression.

“He was there with me in those moments. So, I have a ton of appreciation for him for that,” Johnson added, highlighting the personal connection he felt with Davis.

A Rollercoaster of Results

While Johnson holds deep personal gratitude for Davis, he also acknowledged the recent ups and downs for the Tar Heels under his leadership. He pointed to the team’s inconsistent results since Davis took over as head coach, noting the highs and lows.

“He took the team to a national championship. He’s had a one seat,” Johnson said, referencing the 2022 NCAA Tournament run to the title game and a subsequent top seed. “It’s just that there’s been a lot of variance.”

Johnson elaborated on this inconsistency: “You know, they go to a national championship then miss the tournament. They get a one seed and then they make a Sweet 16 and then the next year, you know, they they barely make it and lose in the round of 64. And then this year they lose in the round of 64.” This pattern of alternating between deep tournament runs and early exits has led to questions about the program’s direction.

Rethinking Coaching Investments

Facing these questions, Johnson offered a thought-provoking perspective on how college basketball programs should approach coaching decisions, especially concerning large buyouts. He suggested that the money spent on paying fired coaches could potentially be better used elsewhere in the modern era of college hoops.

“If firing a coach means that you have a large buyout to pay, don’t you think you’d be better off taking that buyout money and putting it into guys in a portal and beefing up your roster, beefing up your budget?” Johnson questioned.

He emphasized the current reality of college basketball, where player movement through the transfer portal is a significant factor. “Because in college basketball right now, like talent wins. You know what I’m saying?” Johnson stated. “The period of time when the portal opens to when you start summer practice is some of the most important times in the entire season and just who you can get.” He stressed that securing top talent is crucial for success.

Johnson’s Enduring Appreciation

Despite the ongoing discussions about the UNC program’s future, Cam Johnson reiterated his strong personal appreciation for Hubert Davis. His feelings go beyond wins and losses, stemming from the support he received during his playing days.

“So, like I said, I don’t know what the future holds and I’m not really sure what happens. All I know is that as a Tarheel that played under HD, Hubert Davis, I I appreciate him,” Johnson said. “And whether he continues to coach for 10 more years, 15 more years, or this is it, like you know, he’s he’s somebody that that that you know, those memories never go away. The appreciation never goes away.”

Ultimately, Johnson believes the decision rests with the university’s athletic department. “It’s on the athletic department now to figure out what’s best for the future,” he concluded.
