The NCAA Men's Tournament is here, and some top teams are already facing upset alerts. Sean Farnum discusses potential upsets, including BYU and AJ Dybantsa, and the impact of Aiden Holloway's arrest on Alabama. St. John's is also a focus after a controversial seeding.
BYU & AJ Dybantsa Face Upset Alert!
The NCAA Men’s Tournament is here. Teams are getting ready for the first round. But some big teams might be in trouble. College hoops analyst Sean Farnum is looking at upset alerts. He thinks some top teams could go home early.
Alabama’s Holloway Out
First, Alabama is dealing with bad news. Star guard Aiden Holloway was arrested. He faces a drug charge. Holloway is a key player for the Crimson Tide. He averages 16.8 points per game. That’s second best on the team. Alabama’s offense is ranked third in the nation. This is a huge blow for them.
Farnum said, “I think you need to change that pick and change it immediately.” He had Alabama going to the Final Four. Now, that seems unlikely. Holloway’s scoring is hard to replace. He shoots 43% from three-point range. Alabama’s defense has also been a problem. This loss makes their path much harder.
Midwest Region: Akron on Alert
In the Midwest region, Farnum is watching Akron. Akron is on upset alert. They are playing Texas Tech. Akron has won 10 games in a row. They average almost 11 three-pointers per game. Their assist-to-turnover ratio is one of the best.
The key for this game is Texas Tech’s health. Christian Anderson might be hurt. He tweaked his groin. If he’s not at 100%, it will help Akron. Farnum noted, “If Christian Anderson is 100% that really would help the Red Raiders.”
West Region: BYU’s Challenge
For the West region, Farnum points to BYU. BYU has AJ Dybantsa. He’s expected to be the top NBA draft pick. Dybantsa has scored over 20 points in 13 straight games. But Farnum sees a weakness.
“This is a team at times that can struggle at the defensive end of the floor,” Farnum said. BYU has had trouble stopping opponents. North Carolina State will try to attack their defense. If Texas wins their first game, they will play through the post against BYU. Dybantsa needs his teammates to step up. Farnum added, “The supporting cast has to step up around AJ Debons.”
South Region: VCU vs. UNC
In the South region, VCU is on upset alert. They are playing North Carolina. Farnum thinks VCU has a good chance. He mentioned Caleb Wilson is healthy for VCU. He believes North Carolina is overrated. Farnum said, “North Carolina is not even a six seed. They’re more like a three seed.”
VCU has played well lately. They were co-champions of their regular season. They are great at drawing fouls. They outscore opponents by five points per game at the free-throw line. If they can get North Carolina in foul trouble, it will help their chances.
East Region: South Florida’s Shot
The East region features South Florida on upset alert. They have an explosive offense. Bri Hodenstein is good at getting steals. South Florida averages 8.8 steals per game. Louisville can be careless with the ball.
The health of Louisville’s Mike Brown Jr. is also a question. He has missed games with a back issue. If South Florida can force turnovers, they have a chance to win. Farnum believes, “South Florida has an opportunity to advance in the NCAA tournament.”
St. John’s “Royally Screwed”?
Chris “Mad Dog” Russo had strong words about St. John’s. They are a five seed in the East. Russo thinks they were treated unfairly. “To me, St. John’s got absolutely royally screwed,” he stated.
St. John’s won the Big East title. They beat UConn, a two seed, twice this season. They also won the regular season championship. Russo asked, “How in the world is St. John’s not a top 12, top 15 team?” Farnum agreed. “Yes, they got royally screwed,” he said.
St. John’s has won 19 of their last 20 games. They are physically tough. Farnum believes this seeding might even help them. “He’s going to allow him to go to the locker room and say nobody believes in us still,” Farnum explained. He thinks St. John’s will come out playing with a chip on their shoulder.
Final Four Predictions
Farnum shared his Final Four picks. He has Michigan State from the East. He picked Florida from the South. Arizona is his pick from the West. Iowa State comes out of the Midwest.
He likes these teams because they are unique. They are also hard to prepare for on short notice. Farnum mentioned the length of Florida and Arizona as advantages.
