BYD’s EV Theme Park: Where Cars Float and Supercars Roar
We experienced BYD's incredible EV capabilities firsthand at their Jiangzhou "Everything Electric Show." From a car that floats in a swimming pool to a 1,000-horsepower hypercar, BYD's rapid evolution is on full display.
BYD’s EV Theme Park: Where Cars Float and Supercars Roar
Four years ago, a visit to BYD’s factory in Shenzhen offered a glimpse into a company with potential. Today, that potential has exploded into a full-blown automotive spectacle. We recently had the opportunity to experience BYD’s remarkable development firsthand at their “Everything Electric Show” in Jiangzhou, China. This isn’t just a factory tour; it’s an immersive theme park designed to showcase the incredible breadth and depth of BYD’s electric vehicle capabilities, from amphibious SUVs to blistering hypercars.
An Adult Playground for EV Enthusiasts
BYD’s Jiangzhou facility is more than just a production hub; it’s a playground for automotive innovation. Imagine a place where you can test the off-road prowess of an SUV on a 28-degree sandy slope, navigate challenging articulation courses, and even drive a luxury vehicle across a swimming pool – all in one day. This unique testing ground allows BYD to push the boundaries of its vehicles in extreme conditions, and for visitors, it offers an unparalleled experience.
Denza’s Off-Road Prowess
Our journey began with the Denza B8 and B5, also known as the Fang Cheng Bao. These vehicles were put through their paces on a variety of terrains. In ‘intelligent mode,’ the cars adeptly adjusted their differentials and systems to handle different surfaces, from gentle bumps to more challenging angles. The true test, however, was the steep 28-degree sandy slope. With a 27-degree pitch angle, the ascent felt like climbing a wall. Engaging ‘mountain road’ mode and a steady application of power, the Denza SUV conquered the incline with surprising ease. The optional ‘creep mode’ offers added control for descents, allowing drivers to maintain a steady pace without constant pedal input, enhancing the sense of security.
The seesaw bridge presented another obstacle, requiring precise maneuvering to maintain balance. The Denza vehicles demonstrated impressive articulation and stability, showcasing their robust suspension and intelligent all-wheel-drive systems. It’s a stark contrast to the perception of BYD as merely an economy car manufacturer from just a few years ago.
The YangWang U8: Floating on Water
Perhaps the most surreal experience was witnessing and driving the YangWang U8 in the facility’s dedicated swimming pool. Yes, you read that right. The U8, BYD’s ultra-luxury SUV, is capable of floating and navigating through water. While the primary purpose here is likely a thorough cleaning and a demonstration of extreme water resistance, the sight of a large SUV serenely floating is undeniably captivating. This feature highlights the extreme engineering and versatility BYD is capable of, moving far beyond conventional automotive applications.
The YangWang U9: A Hypercar Emerges
The main event for many, including ourselves, was the chance to experience the YangWang U9 on the facility’s race circuit. This hypercar represents a monumental leap for BYD. Boasting carbon fiber construction, over 1,000 horsepower, and a price tag exceeding £100,000, the U9 is a technological tour de force. Its performance credentials are as impressive as its appearance, with claims of being one of the fastest production cars around the Nürburgring.
On the track, the U9 delivered an exhilarating experience. Despite a limited time, we reached speeds of 170 km/h (105 mph) before being asked to slow down. The handling was described as incredibly sharp, the brakes powerful, and the acceleration breathtaking. The car felt remarkably balanced and confidence-inspiring, making it surprisingly easy to drive fast. The contrast between this sophisticated supercar and the basic BYD models from just five years ago is nothing short of astonishing. The U9 is a tangible testament to BYD’s rapid evolution into a global automotive powerhouse.
Inside BYD’s Manufacturing Might
The visit also included a restricted tour of BYD’s stamping and assembly facilities. The scale of operations is immense. The stamping room utilizes massive presses, producing body panels for various brands, including Denza and potentially models like the Seagull, at a rate of approximately one stamp every five seconds. These panels then move through rigorous quality control before being stored in vast warehouses filled with hundreds of molds.
A significant observation from the factory floor was the increased automation compared to four years prior. While human involvement was once central to the assembly process, the modern facility relies heavily on robotics. This shift indicates a substantial investment in advanced manufacturing techniques, leading to greater efficiency and precision. The assembly line, with cars awaiting interiors and doors, showcased a highly streamlined process, highlighting BYD’s commitment to scalability and technological advancement.
The Verdict: BYD’s Meteoric Rise
Our day at BYD’s Jiangzhou facility painted a vivid picture of a company that has transformed itself at an unprecedented pace. From a manufacturer of more basic EVs, BYD has rapidly ascended to become a serious contender in the luxury and performance segments, alongside its established strength in mass-market electric vehicles. The ability to produce vehicles that can float, conquer extreme off-road courses, and set blistering track times demonstrates a level of engineering ambition and capability that few could have predicted.
While specific pricing and trim levels for all models showcased were not fully detailed during the visit, the presence of the ultra-luxury YangWang U8 and the hypercar U9 suggests a strategic push into premium markets. The Denza models offer a blend of luxury and capability, targeting buyers who seek more than just basic transportation. For consumers, BYD’s rapid development means increased choice and competition, particularly in the EV space. The value proposition is becoming increasingly compelling as BYD continues to deliver advanced technology and impressive performance across a wide range of vehicles. The question is no longer if BYD is a major player, but how high it will climb.
