Blakes Drops 54 to Lead Vanderbilt Upset!

The Vanderbilt Commodores are back, and they’ve got a star ready for battle. Mikayla Blakes dropped an incredible 54 points to lead Vanderbilt to a stunning upset victory, showing everyone that this program is on the rise. Head Coach Shea Ralph, a former UConn legend herself, has transformed the Commodores into a team that fights for every possession and plays with intense heart.

From UConn Star to Coaching Firebrand

To understand the fire that Shea Ralph brings to Vanderbilt, you have to look back at her playing days. At UConn, she was known for her grit and determination, earning Most Outstanding Player honors when the Huskies won it all in 2000. Future Hall of Famers Swin Cash and Sue Bird played alongside her, but it was Ralph who often showed up when it mattered most. “She’s one of the gutsiest, most determined kids I’ve ever been around,” one observer recalled. Ralph hated to lose, and that intensity was clear to everyone.

Sadly, her playing career was cut short by injuries, including a fifth ACL tear. But the love for the game and the desire to impact young women never faded. “I learned so much as a player that my experience at UConn made me want to be a coach,” Ralph explained. She wanted to give back and help shape young lives just as hers had been shaped.

Building a Program from the Ground Up

Ralph’s coaching journey took her to Pittsburgh and then back to UConn, where she spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach. After the 2021 season, it was time for her to lead her own program. Many wondered why she would leave the powerhouse UConn program for Vanderbilt and the tough SEC conference. “Lots of people are like, ‘Why would you do that? Why would you leave Yukon and go there and the SEC and like you’re not going to win there?'” Ralph recalled. But she knew she could win, and she needed great players to do it.

She found that star in Mikayla Blakes, her signature recruit. When Blakes first visited, some questioned her choice. “A lot of people were like, ‘Really? This is where you want to go?'” Blakes said. But stepping on campus, she knew it was the right place. “As soon as I step foot on campus, I knew this is where I wanted to be at and I would thrive.” Blakes and Ralph took a chance on each other, and it’s paying off.

Blakes: The Fearless Scorer

Mikayla Blakes is more than just a scorer; she’s a competitor built different. “She’s built different and she’s absolutely fearless,” one commentator noted. The biggest moments are her favorite moments to shine. Her incredible 54-point performance in the recent upset is a prime example. This season, she has led Division 1 in scoring and earned the highly coveted SEC Player of the Year award. Last season, as a freshman, she was named SEC Freshman of the Year and set an SEC scoring record. Blakes embodies the toughness Ralph wants her team to play with.

Vanderbilt’s Resurgence

In just five seasons, Shea Ralph has brought Vanderbilt basketball back to national prominence. She ended a decade-long drought from the NCAA tournament and is now aiming to make the Commodores a consistent elite program. “What Shea has done with this team has just been outstanding,” an observer stated. Ralph credits her players for her success. “I’m having the time of my life coaching this team. Since the day that I got here, my players have made me better and are the absolute reason that Vanderbilt basketball is where it is.”

Ralph’s coaching philosophy is clear: push for constant improvement while enjoying the process. “She comes in here every day and says, ‘Hey guys, I’m I’m really proud of you, but let’s get better.'” Her belief in developing strong habits, not just focusing on the scoreboard, resonates with her team. “What I really like about Coach Ralph is her unwavering belief. She always reminded us that it’s not about the scoreboard, it’s about the habits that we’re developing.” The message is simple: work hard, be tough, win games, and enjoy the journey. Vanderbilt is proving it can be done.
