Augusta National Revives ‘The Patch’ for Public Golf

Augusta National, the revered home of the Masters, is expanding its commitment beyond the famous green jackets. They’re making a major move to boost public golf right in their own city. Augusta National announced plans to breathe new life into the Augusta Municipal Golf Course, affectionately known by locals as ‘The Patch’. This project aims to create a new chapter for public golf, making it more accessible and vibrant for everyone in Augusta.

The nickname ‘The Patch’ has a colorful history, depending on who you ask. Some say it came from the need to find a decent patch of grass to even hit a golf ball. Others point to an old cabbage patch that used to be near the clubhouse. Whatever the origin, the name stuck, and so did the course’s special meaning for generations of golfers.

A Home for All Golfers

For many years, ‘The Patch’ has been more than just a golf course. It’s been a legendary spot for locals, a place where new golfers learn the game, diversity is welcomed, and friendships are built. Ira, a long-time golfer, explained what makes the course so special. “It was a home away from home,” he said. Players would gather, play cards, and share stories with caddies from Augusta National. The camaraderie was so strong, Ira joked, “Sometime I couldn’t kick them out the building. Guys, we got to close. I want to go home.”

Opened back in 1928, ‘The Patch’ became a crucial spot for Black golfers in Augusta, especially those who worked as caddies. They weren’t just playing golf; they were building a community. Even as the course faced challenges over time, its spirit remained.

A New Era with Tiger Woods’ Touch

In 2023, Augusta National stepped in to help restore the beloved course. The transformation included a significant contribution from golf icon Tiger Woods, who helped design a new 9-hole short course called ‘The Loop’. This new addition, built for beginners and lit for nighttime play, is set to bring fresh energy to a place that has always held a special place in people’s hearts.

Discussing Tiger Woods’ involvement, the team mentioned, “He did some rerouting. He did some tweaks here and there with how the golf holes were shaped and orientated from T’s to to greens.” This collaboration ensures the new course blends modern design with the classic feel of ‘The Patch’.

The Patch Reopens, Spirit Intact

On March 19, 2026, ‘The Patch’ officially reopened its gates. While the course looked different after the renovations, the familiar feeling of home returned for many. “For over a year and a half, they didn’t have a home. So those smiling faces, they was happy to be back home again,” one person shared. The reopening brought back the joy and sense of belonging that ‘The Patch’ is known for.

The course was never about having perfect conditions; it was always about the people. It was about the porch gatherings, the endless stories, and the hours that felt like days. Now, that welcoming atmosphere is back, more polished than ever. “I would do this everywhere because it’s such a cool thing to have in a community where golf is that accessible,” remarked one observer.

Community Excitement

The local community is buzzing with pride and excitement. “People are very proud of this facility,” noted one resident. “I can’t tell you how many people I’ve bumped into that are just so excited about what’s to come and getting out here and playing.” The revitalized ‘Patch’ promises to be a central hub for golf and community connection in Augusta for years to come.
