AI Pilot Tech Jumps to Public Markets

A company developing artificial intelligence for flight operations, Merlin Labs, recently went public through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) merger. The company aims to bring advanced AI-powered flight technology to military aircraft, with the goal of automating flight from takeoff to landing. Merlin Labs announced it secured $200 million in gross proceeds from this public offering.

Merlin Labs CEO Matt George explained that going public via SPAC was chosen to speed up their mission. The company has a significant contract with the U.S. military and government to integrate its AI pilot software. “Being in the public market allows us to do that much more quickly and easily,” George stated. He believes this move will help accelerate the delivery of these advanced capabilities to the military.

What Merlin Pilot Can Do

The Merlin Pilot system is designed to be more than just an advanced autopilot. It uses artificial intelligence combined with traditional flight controls to enable autonomous flight. This technology can be applied to existing aircraft, like the C-130 cargo plane and the KC-135 refueling tanker. It can also be used for entirely new, uncrewed aircraft, including fighter jets.

The system can operate with or without a human pilot. It can act as a backup for human pilots or fly an aircraft completely on its own. Merlin Pilot is engineered to handle the entire flight process, from takeoff to touchdown, autonomously. It can even communicate with air traffic control and make its own operational decisions. While still in development, the system has undergone testing in various locations, requiring it to adapt to different accents during communications.

Military Applications and Contracts

Merlin Labs is a prime contractor working with the U.S. Air Force to bring autonomy to the C-130J Super Hercules cargo plane fleet. This partnership aims to provide support to human pilots, allowing them to focus more on mission command rather than physically flying the aircraft. The company is also extending its contract work to the KC-135 refueling tanker fleet, partnering with Air Mobility Command.

The development comes after a recent tragedy where a U.S. refueling plane crashed near Iraq, resulting in the loss of six service members. While not directly linked to Merlin’s technology, George acknowledged the demanding nature of long-duration missions for crews on aircraft like the KC-135. He emphasized the importance of providing crew members with more support, cognitive assistance, and autonomy to improve effectiveness and safety. “Anything we can do to provide crew members more support, more cognitive support and more autonomy to make them more effective and safer is absolute imperative we must undertake,” George said.

Commercial Aviation Prospects

Beyond military use, Merlin Labs is also pursuing certification for commercial aviation. The company announced over two years ago that it was the first in the world to establish a civil certification basis for takeoff-to-touchdown autonomy. They have an active certification program with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Merlin Labs anticipates achieving full certification for autonomous flight before any other company in the industry. Currently, no certified takeoff-to-touchdown autonomous aircraft exist. The company aims to be the first to achieve this milestone. George stated, “There is no certified takeoff to touchdown aircraft in existence today and we’re fighting really hard to be the first.”

Funding and Future Plans

The $200 million raised will be used to deploy the Merlin Pilot system with U.S. armed services. This will help gather crucial flight hours and experience, which will enable the company to add new capabilities and missions. The plan is to expand from the C-130 and KC-135 to more aircraft types before eventually transitioning to civil aircraft applications.

Merlin Labs’ core message is the importance of American air power and the strategic advantage of developing autonomy for American aircraft. The company sees the current global situation as a critical inflection point and aims to lead in delivering autonomous air power not only for the U.S. but also for its allies worldwide.

Market Reaction

Following its public debut, Merlin Labs’ stock experienced volatility. Initially down 9%, the stock later reversed its losses and traded up by approximately 4% during the interview, indicating investor interest in the company’s technology and future prospects.

Market Impact

Merlin Labs’ entry into the public market signals growing investor confidence in AI-driven automation within the aerospace sector. The company’s focus on military applications, backed by significant government contracts, provides a strong foundation. However, the journey to full commercial certification by the FAA will be a key indicator of long-term success and broader market adoption.

What Investors Should Know

Investors are watching the progress of AI in aviation closely. Merlin Labs’ dual approach, targeting both defense and commercial markets, offers diversification. The company’s ability to navigate complex regulatory environments, particularly with the FAA, will be crucial. The successful integration of its technology into existing military fleets and the eventual certification for civilian use will shape its valuation and market position.
