Accuser Speaks Out, Swalwell Denies Allegations

CNN has spoken with the former staffer who detailed the alleged assault. She stated, “Eric shouldn’t have raped me.” While her account was corroborated by records, CNN has not independently confirmed allegations from three other women who have also come forward. Swalwell addressed the accusations on social media platform X, calling them “flat false” and “absolutely false.” He vowed to fight them with all his strength, stating they “did not happen” and “have never happened.” Despite his denials, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed to MSNC that it is investigating the 2024 allegation. This investigation could lead to criminal charges, a trial, and potential prison time, alongside civil liabilities.

Political Fallout and Calls for Resignation

The political repercussions have been swift. Many within the Democratic party are calling for Swalwell to resign from Congress. This includes prominent figures like former Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leadership. Strategist Basil Smichel noted that Swalwell’s continued presence in Congress could become a significant liability for Democrats. “The longer that he stays in, the bigger the stain,” Smichel said. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, who recently entered the race, believes Swalwell’s actions are “disgusting” and that there is a “culture of impunity in our politics that we’ve got to change.” Mahan praised the accusers, stating, “The women who step forward are incredibly courageous, should be believed.” He added that Swalwell’s suspension of his campaign was the “very least he can do” and that he “needs to resign from Congress.”

Critique of Other Democratic Candidates

Mayor Mahan criticized other potential Democratic frontrunners, specifically mentioning a billionaire who made his fortune investing in private prisons, ICE facilities, and oil and gas companies. Mahan argued that this candidate’s investments are “antithetical to the Democratic Party’s core values” and that he has “no relevant public experience.” He also pointed to a “MAGA-backed TV commentator” as another problematic option. Mahan believes California deserves better and that flawed candidates with baggage cannot effectively counter the Republican and MAGA movement. He highlighted his own record as mayor of San Jose, citing reductions in crime and homelessness, as proof of his ability to lead.

Mahan stated his intention to win the governorship and turn things around for California, aiming to show the state can “really lead the nation.” He emphasized that his experience in San Jose, where he claims to have led the city to become the safest big city in the country and reduced homelessness by one-third, provides a strong contrast to other candidates. He also addressed common Republican criticisms about California, such as rising crime and homelessness, and the high cost of housing. Mahan asserted that his administration tackled retail theft by supporting accountability measures and mandating treatment for addiction. He believes his results-driven approach is the best resistance to the “divisive, reckless” MAGA movement and can restore California as a “land of opportunity.”
