Iran Talks Collapse; US Imposes Strait of Hormuz Blockade
Peace talks with Iran have collapsed, leading the U.S. to blockade the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump demands complete compliance from Iran on nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Congress tackles homeland security funding and election integrity measures, while a lawsuit against Harvard highlights concerns over anti-Semitism on elite campuses.
Iran Talks Collapse; US Imposes Strait of Hormuz Blockade
Peace talks between the United States and Iran, led by Vice President JD Vance in Pakistan, have ended without an agreement. Iran rejected the U.S. terms after 21 hours of substantive but ultimately unsuccessful negotiations. In response, the U.S. will begin blocking all ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz, starting today.
President Trump Demands ‘Everything’
President Trump stated that Iran’s desire for nuclear weapons was the core issue. He emphasized a long-standing policy: “The country will not have nuclear weapons.” He described the initial negotiations as starting weakly, with Iran believing they held leverage. However, President Trump asserted that Iran’s military is severely weakened, predicting they would return to the bargaining table to accept all U.S. demands. “I told my people I want everything. I don’t want 90%, I don’t want 95%,” he said.
U.S. Final Offer Rejected
Vice President JD Vance presented a final offer to Iran. Key terms included ending uranium enrichment, ceasing funding for groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, and stopping toll collection fees in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s rejection of these terms has led to the U.S. taking a more forceful stance.
Congresswoman Stefanik Backs Trump’s Stance
New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, a member of the House Intelligence and Armed Services Committees, supported President Trump’s actions. She called Iran’s rejection a “grave strategic mistake” and stated that President Trump is prioritizing national security by preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. “He is correct to make sure that Iran is not able to surpass any of these red lines,” Stefanik commented.
Stefanik echoed President Trump’s assessment of Iran’s weakened position, saying, “Iran will come back to the table because they have no cards.” She highlighted that Iran has had ample opportunity to engage in talks but has repeatedly turned away, contributing to decades of chaos and bloodshed, including funding for militant groups. “The regime has blood on their hands of not only U.S. soldiers but think of the funding for Hamas and Hezbollah over multiple decades,” she added.
Focus on Homeland Security Funding and Reconciliation
As Congress returns to session, a major focus is the future pay for Department of Homeland Security employees. The government shutdown is entering its 59th day. President Trump has given his support to a reconciliation package aimed at immigration enforcement, intended to break the legislative stalemate. He stated on Truth Social, “Reconciliation is on track, we are moving fast and focused at keeping the border secure, getting funding to the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department to continue the incredible success at making America safe again.”
House Republicans are committed to fully funding homeland security. Stefanik criticized House Democrats for opposing measures that put border and national security at risk. “We need to make sure our CBP officers are paid,” she stated, referencing her own district along the northern border. Republicans plan to pursue reconciliation to ensure these critical funds are allocated. President Trump is actively engaged with House and Senate leadership on this matter.
Defense Budget and Save Act
Regarding the defense budget, Stefanik supports necessary investments to ensure the U.S. has adequate munitions and supports national defense priorities, aligning with a “peace through strength” approach. She emphasized the importance of passing a defense supplemental, especially for her constituents in the 10th Mountain Division, one of the most deployed divisions in the U.S. Army.
The Save America Act, focused on election integrity, is also a priority. Stefanik believes it should be included in the reconciliation package, using “every tool possible” to pass it before the upcoming election. “It is the one opportunity to get this across the finish line,” she said.
Lawsuit Against Harvard Over Anti-Semitism
The Trump administration is suing Harvard University, accusing the Ivy League institution of failing to address anti-Semitism against Jewish students. The government seeks to halt all existing grants and demands Harvard repay federal funding received since October 7th. Stefanik, who has been vocal on this issue, played a role in the former Harvard President’s resignation.
Stefanik’s new book, “Poisoned Ivy,” argues that elite institutions are morally and institutionally failing. She referenced the controversial congressional hearing involving the presidents of Harvard, Penn, and MIT, where she witnessed “moral and academic failure.” She criticized these schools for failing to control pro-Hamas encampments, rising anti-Semitism, and physical assaults on Jewish students. Stefanik believes these schools have strayed from their founding principles and American values, leaning too far left.
The book offers a behind-the-scenes look at these institutions and highlights universities like the University of Florida and the University of Chicago that are focused on academic excellence. Stefanik noted that the Department of Justice lawsuit against Harvard is crucial because the school has not complied with civil rights protections for students and must be held accountable. “The schools won’t fix themselves. It’s up to Congress, the Administration and the American people to hold them accountable,” she concluded.
New York’s ‘Brain Drain’ and Gubernatorial Race
When asked about dropping out of the New York gubernatorial race, Stefanik cited personal and professional reasons, including caring for her young son and maintaining her role in the slim House majority. She expressed concern about New York’s “brain drain,” attributing population loss to “tax and spend failed policies.” She criticized New York City’s mayor for advocating tax increases and Governor Kathy Hochul for being influenced by socialists.
Stefanik stated that New Yorkers are moving to states like Florida, Tennessee, and Texas. She urged Republicans in New York to focus on cutting taxes, referencing her past role in negotiating significant tax cuts and advocating for the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction. “We need to get smart in New York and not play footsies with the radical Democrats but stand strong for cutting taxes,” she advised.
