Melania Trump Breaks Silence on Epstein, Stuns White House
First Lady Melania Trump issued a strong denial this week regarding any close relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. In a rare public statement, she declared, "The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today." Her former aide, Stephanie Grisham, expressed surprise but supported the move, highlighting Melania Trump's independent nature.
First Lady Denies Epstein Ties in Rare Public Statement
First Lady Melania Trump issued a strong denial this week regarding any close relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. In a rare public statement, she declared, “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today. To be clear, I never had a relationship with Epstein or his accomplice, Maxwell.” This statement surprised many inside the White House, with President Trump himself telling The New York Times that he was unaware his wife planned to speak on the matter.
Surprise Statement Raises Questions
While President Trump later told The New York Times that he knew Melania Trump wanted to discuss Epstein at some point and felt she had the right to do so, the exact timing and reasons behind her statement remain unclear. The First Lady also called on Congress to hold a public hearing for Epstein survivors. This comes as President Trump has frequently referred to the Epstein controversy as a “Democratic hoax” and urged the country to move on.
Former Aide Details Melania’s Independence
Stephanie Grisham, former chief of staff and press secretary for Melania Trump, shared her surprise at the First Lady’s public statement. “Most of the time she would say, ‘Don’t reply.’ Most of the time she wanted to stay quiet,” Grisham said in an interview. “So I was just as surprised as I think the whole country and maybe the world when, you know, she stepped out and did this press conference of sorts a couple of days ago.”
Behind the Decision
Grisham suggested two possible reasons for Melania Trump’s decision to speak out. “She’s trying to get ahead of something, or she just saw some things, you know, online or on X and that was the last straw. And she got upset and decided that the story was kind of everywhere in her mind and she wanted to do this.” Grisham emphasized Melania Trump’s independent nature, noting that decisions made in the East Wing were not typically cleared with the West Wing. “When she feels really strongly about something, she decides to speak out, and that has nothing to do with how it will reflect on her husband politically or otherwise or the West Wing,” Grisham explained.
Trump’s Reaction and Legacy Concerns
The Epstein investigation is expected to be a part of Donald Trump’s presidential legacy. When asked by The New York Times if he was upset that Melania Trump had brought the story back to the forefront, President Trump stated, “No, he said, I never get upset.” However, Grisham expressed skepticism. “Oh, well, as my, I’m Thank you for the laughter this morning. No, you know, when he first said he knew nothing about it, I called BS publicly. And then, of course, now he’s saying he knew about it, that there’s not a chance he’s not upset,” she commented.
Support for the First Lady’s Move
Despite uncertainty about her motivations, Grisham voiced support for the First Lady’s actions. “No matter her motivation, I am glad she did this. The victims of Epstein have been so poorly treated by this administration, specifically the Department of Justice… And then the Republican leadership in Congress, many, many Republicans in Congress. So I’m glad she has done this.” Grisham acknowledged that some survivors might feel put in a difficult position, but added, “At least it’s being talked about. People are being reminded of it again. So despite Melania Trump’s motivations, not knowing what they are, I say kudos to her for doing this. That was really a strong move.”
Looking Ahead
Melania Trump’s public statement marks a significant moment, bringing renewed attention to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. The First Lady’s independent stance and her call for congressional action suggest a potential shift in how the issue is addressed. Observers will be watching to see if this statement leads to further public engagement from the First Lady or increased pressure on Congress to hold hearings, particularly given the administration’s previous efforts to downplay the controversy.
