Ukraine Pushes Back on Territory Swap Talk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly rejected any notion of territorial concessions in exchange for peace, directly addressing remarks made by U.S. Senator JD Vance. The President emphasized that every square meter of Ukrainian land is vital and that Ukraine needs strong security guarantees before considering any further steps in negotiations.

Zelenskyy Responds to Vance’s Comments

During a press conference, President Zelenskyy was asked about comments attributed to Senator Vance, who reportedly suggested that progress in peace talks was being held up by the issue of a “piece of territory.” Zelenskyy expressed his strong disagreement with this framing. He pointed out that Senator Vance is not involved in the official negotiations between the United States, Ukraine, and Russia. The President stressed the importance of understanding the true scale of Ukrainian territory, which he described as independent and critical for regional security. He highlighted that these areas contain strong defensive structures and are home to hundreds of thousands of people.

“Every square meter of our land is Ukrainian land, and certainly not for any of our partners to decide.”

Zelenskyy explained that Russia’s long-standing objective has been to occupy eastern Ukraine, using these captured areas as staging grounds for further offensive actions. He reiterated that Ukraine currently lacks the necessary security guarantees to consider any steps that might involve territorial changes. He concluded by firmly stating that all Ukrainian land belongs to Ukraine and not to any external parties.

Preparing for Winter Amidst Funding Challenges

The President also discussed Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to prepare for the next winter, despite challenges posed by the blocking of European financial aid. This aid was intended for recovery, new defenses, winter preparations, and the development of alternative energy networks. Ukraine is currently relying on domestic resources while actively working with partners to unblock crucial support packages. Zelenskyy urged local communities to engage with their international counterparts, explaining that blocking aid to Ukraine directly benefits Russia.

He specifically acknowledged the contributions of Ukraine’s Hungarian community for their support in defense efforts and for assisting internally displaced persons and relocated businesses. The war has caused a significant redistribution of economic activity within Ukraine, with western regions, particularly Zakarpattia, experiencing notable economic growth. This growth is not just about businesses but also about community development and social cohesion.

Addressing Global Security and Energy Markets

President Zelenskyy also touched upon the complex situation in the Middle East, noting the expected increase in political and diplomatic activity around Iran, while hoping for a decrease in military actions. He observed that global oil prices have decreased due to market instability, emphasizing the importance of maintaining this trend. The world, he stated, desires stability and security.

He mentioned a report from the National Security and Defense Council Secretary, detailing ongoing work with countries bordering Iran and plans for new security agreements. A meeting was scheduled to discuss a second wave of these agreements, underscoring Ukraine’s commitment to global security and its expectation of reciprocal contributions from partners to strengthen Ukraine.

On Strikes Against Russian Oil Refineries

Regarding Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, President Zelenskyy stated that a reduction in attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure would lead to a corresponding reduction in strikes on Russian facilities. He considered this approach fair and logical: if Russia ceases attacks on Ukrainian energy, Ukraine will cease attacks on Russian energy. He acknowledged that comparing the scale of attacks is difficult, but noted that Russia has inflicted far more damage and casualties on Ukraine throughout the war.

When asked about potential partner demands to halt these strikes, Zelenskyy responded that Ukraine is using its weapons for self-defense. He argued that failing to retaliate would embolden Russia to continue its attacks without regard for Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine must respond proportionally and justly, using its available resources.

Frontline Situation and Future Negotiations

On the military front, information suggests Russia has set objectives to capture Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka by the end of April. However, Ukrainian officials believe this goal is unattainable due to insufficient Russian forces and the significant losses they are incurring. The situation on the Pokrovsk direction remains extremely difficult, but Ukrainian forces are holding the line.

Looking ahead, President Zelenskyy confirmed that high-level U.S. officials, potentially including figures like Victoria Nuland and Robert Kushner, are expected to visit Kyiv after the Easter holidays. The exact timing will depend on their ongoing diplomatic engagements, including negotiations concerning Iran.
