General: Trump’s Iran Policy is Historic Geopolitical Blunder
A former top U.S. Army general has labeled President Trump's approach to Iran as the "biggest geopolitical blunder in American history." General Steven Anderson argues that while tactical goals were met, strategic losses have weakened America's global standing and damaged vital alliances. He also stated that military personnel would be obligated to disobey any illegal orders, such as those threatening to "annihilate Iran."
Former General Calls Trump’s Iran Actions ‘Biggest Geopolitical Blunder’
A former top U.S. Army logistician has strongly criticized President Trump’s handling of the Iran situation, labeling it the “biggest geopolitical blunder in American history.” General Steven Anderson, who served as chief logistician for all U.S. and coalition forces under General Petraeus during the Iraq War, believes Trump’s actions have weakened America’s global standing and damaged crucial alliances.
Tactical Wins, Strategic Losses
While acknowledging that the U.S. military has achieved significant tactical victories against Iran, including degrading its military infrastructure and eliminating leadership, General Anderson argues these successes have come at a great strategic cost. “Iran no longer has an ability to project power,” Anderson stated, but “we don’t understand the nature of our foe.” He described the Iranian leadership as “religious fanatics” for whom the conflict is an existential threat. This, he believes, has pushed undecided Iranians closer to the hardline regime, effectively strengthening Iran’s position globally.
Anderson pointed to Iran’s continued ability to generate revenue, potentially through “charging tolls” in the Strait of Hormuz, and the presence of unaccounted-for highly enriched uranium as evidence of strategic losses. “If you stack it up, there’s no way that you can argue that the United States is any better off,” he asserted. “We have lost strategically to Iran.”
Damaged Alliances and Global Standing
A major concern for General Anderson is the damage Trump’s policies have inflicted on America’s relationships with its allies. “We have insulted our NATO alliance partners. We have denigrated them. We didn’t consult with them before we conducted this war,” he said. He emphasized that these alliances, like NATO which has been in place for 80 years, have been crucial for global economic development and prosperity.
Anderson recalled his own experience in Iraq, where a coalition of 32 member nations contributed significantly to the effort, making the U.S. powerful. “Unfortunately, we have degraded that alliance tremendously,” he lamented. “We are no longer the bright shining beacon of democracy in the world today. We’re acting like a predatory bully.” He feels Trump views America’s military as a personal militia, used to project strength without regard for the consequences to the nation’s global status.
Refusal of Illegal Orders
The conversation turned to a specific threat made by Trump on Truth Social to potentially “annihilate Iran” and “destroy the civilization of Iran.” General Anderson stated unequivocally that he would not have obeyed such an order if he were in uniform. “It would have been an absolutely illegal order. It would have been a war crime,” he declared. He compared it to the actions of Nazi leadership held accountable at the Nuremberg trials.
Anderson stressed that U.S. military personnel swear an oath to the Constitution, not to a person. “That means obeying the laws and obeying legal orders. And it you have an obligation to disobey illegal orders.” He believes that faced with such an order, there would have been a mass resignation of senior leaders.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs’ Stance
When asked if he believed serving officers, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, would also refuse such an order, Anderson expressed confidence. “I believe that they would have done that.” He cited anecdotal evidence suggesting that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Dan Kaine, had indeed “put his foot down” and indicated he would not carry out such a directive. “I believe that that would have crossed the line,” Anderson said, even if General Kaine had shown loyalty to Trump previously.
Anderson reiterated his belief that military training and an understanding of the oath to the Constitution would prevent personnel from carrying out illegal orders of that magnitude. “They would have resigned,” he concluded.
