Oil Prices Plummet 17%, Schumer Faces Fierce Backlash

Oil prices experienced a dramatic fall, dropping 17% in a single day, marking the largest decline since 2010. This significant market movement occurred as the U.S. prepared for crucial negotiations with Iran in Pakistan. The two nations had previously agreed to a two-week ceasefire. Vice President was set to lead the talks, though President Trump expressed some security concerns.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were expected to attend these meetings. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) faced a 55-day shutdown. Democrats, led by figures like Chuck Schumer, signaled their intent to focus on other priorities. Schumer planned to force another vote on an Iran war powers resolution upon their return from recess.

Democrats Signal Potential 25th Amendment Vote

Top Democrats also indicated a willingness to consider invoking the 25th Amendment. This amendment allows for the removal of a president from office. Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin announced plans for a virtual briefing focused on accountability for the Trump administration. This political maneuvering comes at a time when the nation is engaged in international conflict and facing economic impacts, particularly on oil and gas prices.

“The president has to focus first on finding out whether or not this is a real agreement,” stated former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. “I’m in a Reagan school of trust but verify and I’m very doubtful but I’m willing to watch.”

Gingrich: Focus on Real Issues, Not Political Games

Gingrich criticized Democratic leaders, suggesting their actions undermine the United States during a critical international confrontation. He questioned the timing of their focus on issues like blocking Homeland Security funding and considering presidential impeachment. Gingrich argued these actions weaken the Democratic party and could lead to surprising election results in the fall midterms.

He recalled past elections where candidates overcame significant deficits, suggesting that campaigns still hold sway. Gingrich predicted that oil prices would likely decrease significantly and the economy would continue to grow, improving the Republicans’ position. He noted the difficulty for any president to maintain focus amidst such complex global and domestic challenges.

Conway: Republicans Can Surprise with Clear Messaging

Kellyanne Conway agreed with Gingrich’s assessment, believing Republicans could surprise many in the upcoming elections. She emphasized the importance of Republican candidates clearly articulating the benefits of the ongoing war and victory to their constituents. Conway strongly criticized the Democratic focus on impeachment, labeling it as their primary strategy.

Conway specifically addressed Senator Chuck Schumer’s comments, questioning his focus on international opinion while serving as a U.S. Senator. She contrasted Schumer’s long tenure in Congress with the perceived “reign of terror” in Iran. Conway suggested that Schumer, having been in public service for over five decades, should consider term limits himself.

Iran Deal and Geopolitical Realignment

She questioned the basis for Democratic criticism, noting their silence on a two-week ceasefire and a potentially pro-American agreement. Conway stressed the need to “decimate the nuclear capability of Iran” and take out their navy. She cited NATO’s Secretary General crediting Donald Trump for increased global safety.

Conway advised Republican candidates to articulate their vision, including energy independence and geopolitical realignments with Gulf States. She pointed out that some traditional allies have not been as supportive. Conway highlighted that Democrats, even those in districts won by Trump in 2024, have not supported lower taxes, fewer regulations, or energy independence.

DHS Shutdown and Funding Disputes

The shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, now in its 55th day, remained a contentious issue. While President Trump signed an executive order to ensure DHS workers received their paychecks, including back pay, the House Freedom Caucus rejected a partial funding plan. They advocated for a single GOP reconciliation bill to fund the entire department.

Discussions involved the potential for two reconciliation bills: one for DHS funding, border patrol, and ICE, and another for fraud, the Save America Act, and defense spending. The President’s proposed defense budget was substantial, aiming for $1.5 trillion next year.

Democrats’ Focus on Trump vs. National Security

Conway criticized Democrats for focusing on removing President Trump while the nation was in conflict and the DHS was not fully operational. She argued that Democrats view DHS solely through the lens of ICE, neglecting essential functions like FEMA and border patrol. Conway described this approach as spiteful and ineffective for running a nation.

She characterized Democratic leaders, including Senator Schumer, as being “pro-Iranian” due to their perceived “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Conway asserted that Democrats would rather coddle Iran than acknowledge the bravery of U.S. airmen or the strength of the military under Trump’s command. She contrasted this with the Republican party’s focus on funding DHS, cutting taxes, and promoting business growth and energy independence.

Midterm Elections: A Campaign of Contrasts

Both Gingrich and Conway agreed that the upcoming midterm elections would be a “campaign of contrasts.” Gingrich emphasized that common-sense Republicans focused on lowering taxes and creating jobs, while Democrats were depicted as “crazy.” He believed President Trump’s rhetoric was setting the stage for a significant choice for voters.

Conway added that Republicans needed to message their role in keeping the nation safer and more prosperous. She also highlighted the need to address core family budget concerns like housing and healthcare, not just immediate costs like gas and groceries. The conversation underscored the significant political and economic stakes leading into the midterms.

President Trump was scheduled to appear on “Sunday Morning Futures” to discuss the current moment, Middle East negotiations, and his economic outlook.
