Wisconsin Dems Score Big Win, Fueling Hope for November Sweep
Democrats secured a significant victory in Wisconsin's state Supreme Court race, with liberal candidate Chris Taylor winning by a 20-point margin. This outcome, coupled with overperformance in a Georgia special election, fuels Democratic hopes for a strong showing in the upcoming midterm elections. Former Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Ben Wickler believes the results signal a potential sweep in November.
Democrats Achieve Decisive Victory in Wisconsin Supreme Court Race
Democrats celebrated a significant win Tuesday night as Chris Taylor, the liberal-backed candidate, secured a landslide victory in Wisconsin’s state Supreme Court election. The win, by a margin of 20 percentage points, signals growing Democratic momentum in a key swing state. This outcome is particularly notable as Donald Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 30,000 votes in the 2024 presidential election. The newly expanded liberal majority on the court, now a 5-2 split, is expected to have a lasting impact on state policy.
Court’s Liberal Majority Has Driven Key Decisions
The Wisconsin Supreme Court’s liberal justices have already used their majority to enact important changes. In 2023, the court ordered new legislative maps, ending a Republican gerrymander that had been in place for over a decade. Just last July, the court overturned Wisconsin’s 176-year-old abortion ban with a narrow 4-3 vote. These actions highlight the court’s potential to shape the state’s legal and political landscape.
“Again, Wisconsin showed the entire nation that we believe that the people should be at the center of government and the priority of our judiciary, not the billionaires, not the most powerful and privilege, but the people.” – Chris Taylor, in her victory speech.
Special Election in Georgia Shows Democratic Overperformance
Another recent election offered promising signs for Democrats. In Georgia, a special election to fill Marjorie Taylor Greene’s congressional seat saw Republican Clayton Fuller win. However, his margin of victory was significantly smaller than expected. Democrats had hoped to see a stronger performance, as Greene had carried the district by 29 percentage points in 2024, more than double Fuller’s winning margin.
Former Party Chair Sees Signs of a November Sweep
Ben Wickler, former chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, expressed his enthusiasm following Taylor’s decisive win. He described the victory as a “landslide” driven by voters frustrated with issues like affordability, foreign wars, and threats to democracy. Wickler believes this outcome sets the stage for a potential Democratic sweep in the upcoming November midterm elections.
Shifting Political Landscape in Wisconsin
Wickler pointed to maps illustrating a significant shift in voting patterns across Wisconsin. He noted that the Democratic gains were not confined to urban areas but extended into rural counties, many of which have historically voted Republican. This widespread support for Taylor contrasts with the previous year’s state Supreme Court race, where billionaire Elon Musk reportedly spent $56 million to support the losing candidate.
“Voters doubled the margin of victory this year,” Wickler stated. “Our extraordinary candidate Chris Taylor flipped 19 additional counties on top of all the ones that flipped last year, including 18 rural counties. These are places where Republicans are used to winning in a walk, and now they voted for Chris Taylor.”
Focus on Key House Races in Wisconsin
With Wisconsin holding eight House seats, six of which are currently held by Republicans, the state is crucial for Democrats aiming to regain control of the House. Wickler identified the third congressional district, currently held by Derek Van Orden, as a prime target. Van Orden, who attended the January 6th rally, represents a district that voted strongly for Chris Taylor in the recent Supreme Court election.
Wickler also highlighted the first congressional district, represented by Brian Steil. He described Steil’s district as purple, meaning it’s politically mixed, and suggested that Steil’s actions, like supporting voter suppression bills, are out of step with his constituents. Wickler emphasized that the recent election results show voters are ready to hold Republican representatives accountable.
People Power as a Driving Force
Wickler stressed the importance of “people power” in overcoming voter apathy and despair. He believes that voters, when energized by issues like the rollback of abortion rights, voter suppression, and economic concerns, can make a significant difference. The Wisconsin Supreme Court election, he argued, demonstrated that collective action can lead to tangible change, offering a model for what could happen nationwide in November.
Looking Ahead: A Call to Action
The results from Wisconsin and Georgia offer a compelling preview of the political energy brewing across the country. As the midterm elections approach, Democrats appear poised to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction. The focus will now shift to mobilizing these energized voters and translating this momentum into victories in key House races this fall, potentially altering the balance of power in Washington.
