Bolton Criticizes Trump’s Iran Policy Amid Ceasefire Uncertainty

Former National Security Adviser John Bolton has voiced significant concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s approach to the conflict with Iran, suggesting the president lacks a clear strategy and is prioritizing short-term political gains over long-term stability. Bolton, speaking on a news program, highlighted the uncertainty surrounding a recent ceasefire and the prospects for upcoming talks, arguing that Trump’s primary motivation appears to be a desire to withdraw from the conflict, driven by worries about rising gasoline prices and potential political fallout in the U.S.

“He wants out. He’s worried about the price at the pump of gasoline in the U.S. He’s worried about the political consequences,” Bolton stated. He added that Trump has never clearly defined his objectives in the region, leading to a situation where the president may be trying to “declare victory and get out.” This approach, Bolton warned, has created significant disagreements about the meaning of the ceasefire itself, with ongoing attacks and conflicting interpretations from various parties like Israel and Iran.

Ceasefire Fragile, Iran’s Nuclear Ambitions Remain a Threat

The effectiveness of the current ceasefire remains highly questionable, according to Bolton. He pointed to continued attacks, including a significant assault on a Saudi Arabian pipeline, and conflicting statements from regional players. “Netanyahu is saying Israel doesn’t regard the ceasefires covering its activities in Lebanon. The Iranians say that it does,” Bolton explained. This lack of clarity on substantive issues means, in his view, that Trump “has not a path forward.”

Bolton also expressed concern over the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ statements indicating closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to Israeli actions against Hezbollah. He believes the U.S. stopped its engagement too soon, particularly concerning his long-held objective of regime change in Iran. Bolton suggested that Iran’s internal command structure might be fractured, potentially bringing the possibility of regime collapse closer than anticipated. He referenced a newspaper report suggesting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is in a coma, though he could not confirm the information.

Trump’s Claims of Victory Undermine U.S. Credibility

The former national security adviser sharply criticized Trump’s repeated claims of complete victory in the Iran conflict. Bolton argued that such statements, especially given the current volatile situation, are not credible to a vast majority of people, both domestically and internationally. He believes Trump’s rhetoric is harmful to the United States, as it dismantles decades of U.S. efforts to build goodwill abroad for personal political gain.

“He is ripping up as he has so many times before decades of effort by the United States to build goodwill on behalf of the country. He’s using it for his own purposes and discarding it when it doesn’t suit him,” Bolton said. He further drew a parallel to Trump’s controversial statement about his “civilization will die tonight,” suggesting such remarks, made from the Oval Office, make it difficult to criticize actions by leaders like Vladimir Putin. Bolton described such statements as “worse than a crime, it’s a mistake,” arguing that Trump fails to grasp the serious global implications of his words.

Regime Change in Iran: The Only Viable Solution, Says Bolton

On the critical issue of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Bolton remains steadfast in his belief that the threat has not receded. While acknowledging that Iran’s nuclear program may have been damaged, he asserted that the regime will rebuild it, potentially with increased support from Russia and China, as long as it remains in power. This scenario, he warned, would turn Iran into a Russian-Chinese outpost threatening the Middle East, leaving Gulf Arab nations in an untenable position.

Bolton unequivocally stated that the only way to neutralize the nuclear threat from Iran, as well as its support for terrorism and global economic disruption, is through regime change. He rejected the idea of repeatedly engaging in limited military actions, which he likened to “mowing the lawn.” Bolton believes the current Iranian regime is a rogue state threatening its neighbors and its own people.

Bolton Urges Support for Iranian Opposition

Bolton argued that the United States is on the verge of missing a critical opportunity to support the Iranian people’s desire for change. He believes the opposition within Iran is widespread but lacks essential resources, including telecommunications, money, and arms. Bolton urged the U.S. to provide aid to the opposition, help them organize, and work with various ethnic and political groups dissatisfied with the current leadership.

“This regime is weaker than it’s been since it took power in 1979. We’re about to blow the opportunity,” Bolton concluded. He stressed that the regime is vulnerable due to economic grievances, dissatisfaction among young people and women, and discontent among ethnic minorities, making it the weakest it has been in decades. Bolton’s remarks underscore a deep skepticism about the current U.S. administration’s strategy and a strong call for a more assertive policy focused on empowering Iranian dissidents.
