U.S. Vice President Vance spoke to thousands in Budapest, strongly endorsing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his policies. The speech highlighted a shared political vision between the two nations.
US Vice President Vance Addresses Hungarian Rally
Budapest, Hungary – U.S. Vice President Vance spoke to a crowd of thousands at a rally in Budapest, offering strong praise for Hungary and its leader, Viktor Orbán. During his address, Vance contrasted Hungary’s policies with those of European Union officials, emphasizing themes of national sovereignty and traditional values. The speech marked a significant moment in U.S.-Hungarian relations, highlighting a shared political outlook between the two nations’ leaders.
Praise for Viktor Orbán and Hungarian Sovereignty
Vice President Vance began his remarks by making a phone call to President Trump, who expressed his support for Orbán and the Hungarian people. “I think they love you even more than they love Victor Orban,” Vance joked to the crowd, referencing Trump’s call. He lauded Orbán as a “fantastic man” who has protected Hungary’s borders and kept its people safe, drawing a stark contrast with other European countries that have experienced what he described as invasions.
“He’s kept your country good. He’s kept Hungarian people in your country,” Vance stated. He added that Orbán has done a “fantastic job.” Vance emphasized that his support for Orbán stems from a belief that the Hungarian leader is doing a good job. “If I didn’t think he did a good job, I wouldn’t be making a call like this,” he explained to the cheering crowd.
The Vice President also highlighted Hungary’s success in maintaining its national identity and security. “You have a band that kept your Country Strong. And you don’t have problems with all of the problems and so many other countries have because they let their countries be invaded,” Vance said. He directly credited Orbán for this, stating, “That’s the only reason you don’t have that problem.”
Critique of Brussels Bureaucrats and Far-Left Ideology
A significant portion of Vance’s speech was dedicated to criticizing what he termed the “far-left ideology” and “faceless bureaucrats” in Brussels. He argued that these officials seek to undermine Western civilization by viewing its foundations as illegitimate and its history as one of injustice. Vance accused them of promoting policies that lead to increased crime, a decline in traditional values, and a weakening of national sovereignty.
“The bureaucrats and Brussels, Those people. should not be listened to,” Vance urged the crowd. He contrasted their approach with that of Hungarian citizens, encouraging them to “listen to your hearts. listen to your souls and listen to the sovereignty of the Hungarian people.” He specifically condemned the idea of withholding funds from countries like Hungary, a tactic he suggested some European leaders might employ.
Vance also touched upon what he called a “shared threat from within” affecting both Hungary and the United States. He described this threat as an ideology that tears down monuments, promotes division, and rejects traditional institutions like the family and Christianity. He stated, “We defend our borders, because we know that it’s the most vulnerable Among Us. who suffer. on our streets are given over. to chaos and violence.”
Shared Values and Future Cooperation
The Vice President expressed admiration for Hungary’s commitment to its national interests, particularly Orbán’s focus on energy security and family policies. Vance noted that Hungary’s energy costs are lower than in most of Europe because Orbán “has fought for energy security.” He also praised Hungary’s efforts in promoting families, creating jobs, and fostering a system that teaches “love of country.”
“We love Europe. We love it. How can we not?” Vance asked the audience, emphasizing that the United States was “birthed from this continent.” However, he quickly pivoted to rejecting policies that he believes harm Europe, such as driving up energy costs and allowing large numbers of unvetted foreigners into countries. He stated, “We reject the faceless bureaucrats who would drive your energy costs through the roof. and open your country to millions of unvetted foreigners in the name of progress.”
Vance concluded by reiterating the strong bond between the U.S. and Hungary, stating, “So I come here, not in the spirit of telling you what to do. I come here. in the spirit of friendship. To offer a few observations about our shared. civilization, and how we can advance it together.” He assured the Hungarian people that the United States stands with them in their fight for freedom and sovereignty.
Looking Ahead
Vice President Vance’s visit and speech underscore a deepening alignment between the Trump-aligned wing of the Republican party and the Orbán government in Hungary. The strong rhetoric against European Union institutions and support for nationalistic policies signal a potential shift in international alliances and a continued focus on cultural and political conservatism on the global stage. Observers will be watching to see how this relationship evolves and influences future political discourse in both the United States and Europe.
