UCLA Bruins Claim 2026 National Championship in Thrilling Victory

The UCLA Bruins have done it! They are the 2026 NCAA National Champions, bringing home the coveted trophy after an incredible tournament run. The celebration was loud and proud as the team accepted their championship hardware, marking a historic moment for the program.

A Season of Grit and Loyalty

The journey to this championship was fueled by a core group of seniors who chose to stay and invest in the team’s growth. Coach Corey Close, beaming with pride, spoke about what these women have meant to the program. “It’s truly indescribable the, you know, the loyalty, the steadfast spirit, their character that they’ve chosen day in and day out,” he said. “I just am so humbled that they’ve chosen to commit to our mission.” He also extended thanks to the alumni, fans, players’ families, and the university, emphasizing that this win is a shared victory. “This is meaningful because of the village we get to share it with,” Coach Close added.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Coach Close highlighted the collective effort, noting contributions from players like Angela Dubalich, Gabriella Hawz, Gianna Nepkins, and Lauren Betts. Kiki Rice was also praised for her role in lifting the team. “Well, we’ve said all year that our selflessness and our work ethic would be the things that fuel us,” Coach Close explained. “It’s one thing to say those things in the summer. It’s a whole another thing to follow through with those things sacrificially, even when it’s hard.” These commitments, he believes, led the team to their destiny.

Lauren Betts: Resilience Personified

A standout player, Lauren Betts, battled through adversity on the court, showcasing remarkable resilience. Her performance, even with a bloody jersey, did not go unnoticed. Coach Close shared a deeply personal moment with her: “No matter what happens today, I will always be more proud of who she’s become and who she’s impacted than any nets will ever cut down.” Betts herself spoke about her mental toughness and dedication to her teammates. “I do it for my teammates. I don’t do it for me,” she stated. “It’s not to get points, it’s to create.” She also shared the profound joy of winning this championship alongside her sister, a teammate. “Having your own family on the team is something that a lot of people don’t get to experience, and I’m so grateful for her,” Betts said, tearing up. “She’s made the season my favorite season I’ve ever experienced and she’s my best friend.”

More Than Just a Game

Beyond her athletic achievements, Lauren Betts has become an important advocate. She spoke about using her platform to help others. “Basketball has given me the platform to change people’s lives,” Betts shared. “When I had that conversation with my mom, I told her that I was put on this earth not just to to score points, but to help people.” Her willingness to speak her truth stems from her own journey and a desire to connect with those facing similar struggles.

Gabriella “Gabs” Hakez: The Engine

Gabriella “Gabs” Hakez was another player who left it all on the court. Coach Close noted her incredible output, suggesting she played like two or even three players at times. “Just doing what I do coming in doing whatever the team needs and just really focusing on defense and rebounding this game,” Hakez said about her performance. “And I’m just so proud of this group and we’re national champions and it feels amazing.” She recalled challenging her team last year to look in the mirror and decide their identity. This season, they decided to be national champions.

A Championship Built on Dedication

The NCAA, represented by Lynn Hollesman, vice president of women’s basketball, and division one committee chair Amanda Braun, officially presented the trophy. They first congratulated South Carolina for an outstanding season and a strong effort in the final game. This championship win for UCLA is a testament to their hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering belief in each other throughout the entire season. The Bruins have proven they are the best in the nation, and their victory will be celebrated for a long time to come.

“We decided to be national champions.” – Gabriella Hakez

A special mention was also made for Pam Walker, recognizing her crucial role in the Bruins’ basketball program, with the statement, “Without Pam Walker, nothing happens for Brew basketball. And if you know, you know.” The 2026 NCAA National Champions, the UCLA Bruins, have earned their place in history.
