Ro Khanna Defends Hasan Piker Show Appearances: ‘We Must Engage’
Representative Ro Khanna defends his appearances on Hasan Piker's show, arguing that engaging with diverse audiences is vital for political discourse. Despite criticism over Piker's past remarks, Khanna believes politicians must meet audiences where they are and push back against harmful rhetoric directly.
Congressman Ro Khanna Stands Firm on Hasan Piker Show Appearances
Representative Ro Khanna has stated he has no regrets about appearing on the show hosted by popular streamer Hasan Piker, a figure known for his socialist commentary. Despite criticism from some fellow Democrats, Khanna insists that engaging with diverse audiences, even those with controversial views, is crucial for political discourse in a multi-racial democracy.
Concerns Over Piker’s Past Statements
Khanna’s appearances have drawn attention due to past remarks made by Piker. Some critics, including members of a left-leaning think tank, have pointed to Piker’s history of using what they describe as “anti-Semitic dog whistles” and making comparisons that equate liberal Zionists with liberal Nazis. Piker has also reportedly stated that Hamas is “a thousand times better than the Israeli state.”
In response to these criticisms, Piker has stated that some of his comments were taken out of context and that he condemns anti-Semitism and describes Hamas as a terrorist threat. He has also appeared alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, covering the Democratic National Convention.
Khanna’s Argument for Engagement
Khanna believes that politicians must be willing to engage in these platforms to share their views and counter opposing narratives. “Should we not go on John Oliver? Should we not go on Joe Rogan? We have to be out there and engage,” Khanna argued. He feels that avoiding such platforms risks alienating voters and losing future elections.
“The people saying don’t engage will cost us future elections,” Khanna stated, emphasizing the need for Democrats to be more active in public discourse.
He acknowledged the risk of legitimizing certain views by appearing on shows like Piker’s, which boasts millions of followers. However, Khanna believes the focus should be on the content of the conversation and the politician’s willingness to push back against harmful rhetoric. “I think the test should be what you say. If someone is going on these programs and not pushing back against anti-Semitism, fine, but I haven’t done the background check on you,” he added, indirectly referencing the interviewer.
Drawing the Line on Controversial Platforms
When asked about where he draws the line, Khanna admitted he likely would not appear on a show hosted by someone like Alex Jones, who has a history of making deeply controversial and offensive statements. “Look, there is obviously a line, and I probably wouldn’t appear on Alex Jones,” Khanna said.
However, he reiterated his stance on Piker, distinguishing him from figures like Jones. Khanna believes Piker’s platform, despite its controversies, is important for reaching a large audience, particularly those critical of certain government policies. “The point is I don’t think that that line should be with Hasan Piker who has millions of followers and largely what his view has been has been critical of the blank check that we gave Netanyahu on the war in Gaza,” he explained.
A Call for More Democratic Outreach
Khanna expressed frustration with the Democratic Party’s perceived reluctance to actively engage in public discourse across various media platforms. He pointed to the visibility of Republican politicians, such as Vice President Vance appearing on multiple Sunday shows, as an example of what Democrats should be doing more of.
“The Democratic Party has been too reluctant to get out there, to mix it up and to engage, and we should be on — actually be doing more of these things,” Khanna urged. He believes increased outreach and engagement are essential for the party’s success in upcoming elections.
Looking Ahead
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the debate over how and where politicians should engage with the public remains critical. Ro Khanna’s defense of his appearances on Hasan Piker’s show highlights a broader discussion within the Democratic Party about strategy, outreach, and the challenges of navigating a media environment filled with both opportunities and pitfalls. The effectiveness of such engagement strategies will be a key factor to watch in future political campaigns.
