UConn Dominates Illinois, Advances to National Championship
The UConn Huskies dominated Illinois to reach the national championship game, aiming for their third title in four years. UConn's defense stifled the Illini, while Braylon Mullins provided an early spark. Despite the loss, Illinois coach Brad Underwood praised his team's character.
UConn Crushes Illinois, One Win Away From Championship Three-Peat
The UConn Huskies are heading back to the national championship game. They put on a dominant performance against Illinois, winning decisively to move one step closer to their third title in four years. The Huskies’ suffocating defense and timely offense proved too much for the Fighting Illini.
Hurley Praises Team’s Resilience and Familiarity
UConn head coach Dan Hurley wasn’t surprised by his team’s ability to disrupt Illinois’ potent offense. “We had the familiarity of that first game,” Hurley explained. “I think we came in with a lot of confidence.” He noted that UConn had built a significant lead in their earlier matchup, showing they could match up well. “You know, we’re UConn, you know, we’re very comfortable in these games at this time of year. You’ve got the pedigree and we’ve got an incredibly resilient team.”
Mullins Sparks UConn’s Early Surge
Guard Braylon Mullins was instrumental in getting UConn off to a fast start. He hit a couple of key three-pointers early in the game, setting the tone. “It just means so much to me to play in front of the hometown and just know that there’s a lot of family and friends in the building,” Mullins said about his performance. “I just coming into the game, I just have so much confidence and it’s just like the positivity around you.” Mullins felt the momentum from their previous Duke game carried over. “I knew coach he’s going to run plays for us and I had two open looks in the beginning of the game and just it started started my night hot.”
Defense Sets the Tone for Huskies
Mullins also highlighted the team’s defensive strategy. “I think just picking up full court and just bothering them,” he said when asked about UConn’s disruptive defense. “We knew that they play their guards usually 40 minutes and just trying to wear them down mentally and physically.” Rebounding was another key focus. “Also with the rebounding, just trying to minimize the offensive rebounds that they get because I think they are like number one in the country with the offense and rebounding rate.”
Hurley Reflects on Historic Run
Looking ahead to the championship game, Hurley drew parallels to his brother’s Duke teams. “It brings me back because I remember just being at the final four I think with my brother,” he recalled. “They went back to back, they lost in the second round and I think they might have lost in a national championship game.” Now, with a chance to win a third title, Hurley wants his team to stay focused. “There’s two Monstars from Space Jam that are playing out there right now and we’re going to have to face one of them. So, we got to get ready.”
Underwood Proud of Illinois’ Character
Despite the loss, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood expressed immense pride in his team’s character and effort. “The joy they brought me,” Underwood said when asked what he’d be most proud of. “This group made me laugh. We didn’t have bad practices. They were competitive, they’re much better human beings than they are players.” He emphasized their commitment to the team. “I think they represented the University of Illinois because they played for the name on the front, not the name on the back.” Underwood acknowledged the tough shooting night for his team. “You know, it’ll be interesting to watch the film ’cause I felt great about the shots we got. They didn’t go.” He added, “It’s just you can’t ask for better shots and they made them.”
Looking Ahead
UConn now prepares for the national championship game on Monday night, aiming to cap off a remarkable season with another title. Illinois, though disappointed, can take pride in a season that showcased their resilience and strong character.
