UNC’s Coaching Search: Stars Align for Big Names

The college basketball coaching carousel has been spinning wildly, with 11 Power Conference jobs already filled. But the biggest prize, the North Carolina job, remains open. Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, a hot commodity, agreed to a 5-year deal worth an average of $7.5 million per year with Arizona, making him one of the top five highest-paid coaches in the sport. Lloyd, who was complimentary of UNC, ultimately decided to stay put, famously stating at his Final Four press conference, “I’m not leaving.” This leaves North Carolina in a tough spot as they search for a successor to Hubert Davis.

Aspirational and Realistic Targets

Pete Thamel breaks down UNC’s coaching options into two tiers: aspirational and realistic. The Tar Heels are expected to make a strong push for coaches who have reached the Final Four. If Dusty May’s team loses their upcoming game, UNC will likely pursue him aggressively, though he remains an unlikely target. Calls are also expected to go out to Danny Hurley and TJ Atleberger. Billy Donovan is also on the list, but his commitment to finishing the current NBA season with the Chicago Bulls complicates any potential move. His season ends on April 12th.

The Realistic Pool and the Cost

For more realistic options, UNC is looking at Scott Drew of Baylor, Grant McCaslin of Texas Tech, Ben McLemore of Iowa, and Mark Byington of Vanderbilt. However, these coaches come with hefty price tags. Drew and McLemore have buyouts around $4 million, while McCaslin and Byington’s buyouts exceed $10 million. To put this in perspective, the largest buyout in college sports history was around $10 million when Kalen DeBoer moved from Washington to Alabama. Even these seemingly more accessible options will be expensive for UNC.

“Most important, Ree, I was told UNCC officials are insistent they’re more concerned with getting the right guy than the timing of the portal opening on Tuesday.”

A Shifting Landscape

The current state of college basketball coaching is a complex web of buyouts, player transfers, and coaching changes. Seth Greenberg notes that the landscape has changed, with more coaches being discussed for top jobs. He points out that coaches often know what they are leaving behind but not always what they are getting into with a new program. This uncertainty, combined with the stability of current roles, explains why some coaches might choose to stay put, even when offered a prominent job like UNC’s.

Concerns About Sustainability

The conversation then shifts to the sustainability of the current system. Greenberg expresses surprise at UNC making a change without a clear successor lined up. He highlights the domino effect of coaching changes, where one move opens up another job, often leading to player transfers as athletes follow coaches. The lack of NCAA regulation in this area is a major concern, especially when compared to the stricter rules in the NBA and NFL regarding tampering and coach movement.

The Business of Coaching

The discussion touches on the business side of college athletics, including massive buyouts. LSU, for example, reportedly owes its coaches over $70 million. The question arises whether moving from a mid-major to a Power Four conference is still a significant upward move when permission to speak with a coach is not always sought. The practice of back-channel communication through agents is common, but it raises ethical questions. UNC’s search has, in effect, driven up the cost for other programs trying to retain their coaches.

What’s Next for UNC?

For North Carolina, the priority remains finding the right coach, regardless of the timing of the transfer portal. The team needs a coach who can win consistently, ideally with a track record of reaching Final Fours and national championship games. The stadium situation, including potential renovations to the Dean Dome, is also a significant factor for any incoming coach. The hope is that UNC can find a leader who can restore the program to its former glory, even if the path to getting there is complicated and costly.
