Illinois quarterback Israel Abrams, the No. 2 ranked player in the 2027 class, has officially committed to the University of Miami. The highly sought-after recruit announced his decision live on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, bringing a huge boost to the Hurricanes’ recruiting class.
Abrams, a four-star prospect, described the moment as “lit” with a lot of emotion and love filling his living room as he made the announcement. He was surrounded by his family, including his mom, dad, and sister, Sariah, as he shared his future plans with the world.
A Blessing and a Long Time Coming
The recruiting process has been a long journey for Abrams, starting back in eighth grade. He received his first offer from Iowa State during the summer of his freshman year. “It’s been a blessing,” Abrams said about the process. “It started all off in eighth grade, going to my first camp at Iowa State and not getting my first offer until the summer of my freshman year. And then ever since then, it’s just kind of taken off.”
Minnesota and Purdue offered him during his sophomore spring, and more offers soon followed. “So going into my junior season, after my sophomore football season, I picked up Purdue and Minnesota and then they started to roll,” he explained.
Gratitude and Goals
Before announcing his commitment, Abrams took time to thank everyone who has supported him. “First, I just want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without him, none of this would be possible,” he stated. He also extended thanks to his entire family, friends, teammates, and teachers, emphasizing his commitment to working hard. “I just want to let them know that I’m gonna keep doing everything on my end to hold it down and just keep doing everything I need to do to work hard,” Abrams said.
A special shout-out went to his quarterback coach, Coach Ho, who he credits with shaping him into the player he is today. “Coach Ho was there from the jump, one of the first people to believe in me when I thought nobody else did,” Abrams shared. “He was the one that just showed me the ropes for the quarterback position and made me into the quarterback that I am today.”
Choosing Coral Gables
The decision to commit to Miami was influenced by the coaching staff’s approach during his visit. “What really did it for us was being down there,” Abrams explained. “The coaches were nothing but helpful and full of information, and they did enough to make us believe in them.” He believes Miami is a place where he can pursue his dreams and “win games for my teammates.”
Abrams’ ambition is clear: “When I get to Miami, my only thing will be is to try to win us a national championship every year.” He added, “I think there’s not nobody that’s ever going to stop us or Miami in the way of anything. So, go Miami!”
Miami’s Momentum
The commitment comes at an exciting time for the Hurricanes. Coach Mario Cristobal and his staff are building significant momentum on the recruiting trail. “Miami just went on an incredible run this past season. Coach Cristobal is going crazy. They got commitments from everybody,” the show’s hosts noted. The addition of a top-tier quarterback like Abrams is seen as a major step in restoring Miami’s program to national prominence.
Abrams’ father, Damian, expressed his excitement, stating, “We believe that this is the best spot for Israel to maximize his ability and to prepare him for the next level.” His mother also shared her enthusiasm for Coral Gables becoming a new destination for the family.
A Hurricane Brotherhood
The hosts highlighted the strong alumni network at Miami, mentioning that Abrams will join a brotherhood of legendary players. “For the rest of your life, you’re going to have a brotherhood of some of the greatest football players of all time looking out for you,” they said.
The sentiment from the show was that Abrams has the “moxie and confidence” to succeed as a Hurricane. With Abrams at the helm, Miami is looking to make a strong push for national championships in the coming years, fueled by Cristobal’s aggressive recruiting and a renewed sense of energy around the program.
