Macron Fires Back at Trump Over Wife Remarks
French President Emmanuel Macron publicly condemned Donald Trump's personal remarks about his wife, Brigitte Macron, calling them "neither elegant nor up to standard." The comments, made at a private event and later leaked, sparked debate on diplomatic engagement strategies. While Macron criticized Trump directly, other leaders like Italy's Giorgia Meloni have found success with private, personal diplomacy.
Macron Responds to Trump’s Personal Jab
French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump for making inappropriate remarks about his wife, Brigitte Macron. The comments, made during a private event in Washington, were accidentally posted online by the White House. Trump’s remarks referenced a video that appeared to show Brigitte Macron touching her husband’s face. Macron called Trump’s comments “neither elegant nor up to standard.” This public pushback signals a potential shift in Macron’s approach to dealing with Trump’s often controversial statements.
Trump’s Remarks and Their Reception in France
Donald Trump, speaking at a private lunch, described a call with Macron. He said, “Then I call up France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly. And he’s still recovering from the right to the job.” He then added, “And I say, ‘Uh, Emmanuel, we’d love to have some help in the Gulf, even though we’re setting records in knocking out bad people and knocking out ballistic missiles.'”
Interestingly, Trump’s comments seem to have been met with a mixed reaction in France. While Macron himself found them unacceptable, some French citizens reportedly found them more palatable than Macron’s own standing. French journalist Elizabeth Moute noted that Trump’s remarks, despite their personal nature, were seen by some as a political gift to Macron, especially given Trump’s own unpopularity in France. “What Trump was actually doing was giving a wonderful present,” Moute explained, adding that it was a “political godsend” for Macron.
Macron’s Strategy: The “Trump Whisperer” Approach
The incident highlights Macron’s past efforts to engage with Trump, sometimes referred to as the “Trump whisperer” strategy. This approach involves trying to build a personal rapport with Trump to influence policy. Macron had previously invited Trump for private discussions, even sending French ships as a gesture. However, Trump’s recent public comments and his sharing of Macron’s invitation on his social media platform, Truth Social, seemed to deeply annoy the French president. This public airing of private communication further complicated Macron’s diplomatic efforts.
Moute suggested that Macron’s annoyance stemmed more from Trump’s public disclosure of their private exchange than the joke itself. “That was something that annoyed him actually much more than the joke,” she stated.
Western Leaders’ Dilemma with Trump
The situation also raises questions about how Western European leaders should engage with Donald Trump. Many leaders have tried to appease Trump to achieve favorable outcomes. Moute contrasted Macron’s direct criticism with the approach of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Meloni has reportedly had success by meeting with Trump privately in Washington or Mar-a-Lago, fostering a more personal and less confrontational relationship.
“She knows how to talk to Trump and she also realizes that you don’t do this with quips,” Moute observed about Meloni’s strategy. “She has flown several times to Washington or sometimes to Maraago in Florida to have a quiet talk with Trump and it always ended well on her side.”
Moute suggested that Meloni’s success might be partly due to her conservative political stance and her gender, noting that Trump has been “very respectful with her.” This approach allows for productive dialogue without public confrontation.
Historical Context and Macron’s Political Position
Macron’s position is also shaped by France’s historical relationship with the United States. Since the era of General Charles de Gaulle, France has maintained a tradition of a degree of skepticism towards American influence, seeking to define its own independent path. This historical context means that direct confrontation with American leaders, even if justified, can be politically complex.
However, Moute pointed out that in an election year, being criticized by Trump could paradoxically benefit Macron. Although Macron cannot run for president again, he has preferred candidates he supports. Being insulted by Trump might actually help his chosen successors by rallying opposition against the former U.S. president.
Looking Ahead
Macron’s sharp rebuke of Trump’s personal remarks marks a significant moment in their ongoing interactions. It remains to be seen whether this public stand will influence future diplomatic strategies or if leaders like Macron will continue to seek private channels for engagement. The effectiveness of different approaches to dealing with Trump, whether direct or conciliatory, will likely continue to be a key consideration for international leaders.
