Tyler Perry Boosts Mojo Brooks’ Pay After Improv Scene

Mojo Brooks is sharing a behind-the-scenes story that shows Tyler Perry’s respect for talent. Brooks recalls a pivotal moment on the set of a Tyler Perry production where an improvised scene led to a significant pay raise. This experience highlights Perry’s hands-on approach and his willingness to reward actors who bring creativity to the set.

Brooks had landed a role in a Tyler Perry production but hadn’t met the media mogul yet. During a table read, Perry was present but unseen, his voice guiding the session. Early in the filming of the show, which also featured Jo Marie Payton, the cast and crew faced a challenge. Perry’s fast-paced shooting style, driven by budget and time constraints, meant scripts were often rewritten on the fly.

“He ain’t got time for that,” Brooks explained. “So they end up rewriting a lot of the script and giving me her parts.” This change meant Brooks was stepping into scenes originally intended for Payton. The actor was still balancing his acting commitments with his stand-up comedy shows, traveling back and forth.

One particular scene involved Brooks sitting on a statue. He decided to improvise the entire sequence, turning it into a new moment for his character, a scene originally meant for Payton. After the cameras stopped rolling, Perry himself approached Brooks. “He grabbed me, said, ‘Let me talk to you for a second,'” Brooks recounted.

Perry directly asked Brooks about his current pay. After hearing the figure, Perry immediately promised a raise. “He was like, ‘I’mma bump that up,'” Brooks said, confirming Perry kept his word. “I made some good money.” This experience left a strong impression on Brooks, who praised Perry’s professionalism and commitment to providing opportunities for Black actors.

“So, I don’t care what they say about him, right?” Brooks stated. “But he uh honestly, bro, you know, very professional. Um, and you know, he he’s always looking to, you know, to give people that look like us the opportunity.”

Boundaries on Set

The conversation then shifted to on-screen boundaries, with host Shay Shay asking Brooks about his limits. Brooks made it clear he has no interest in kissing other men on camera. However, when the topic of sex scenes with women came up, Brooks expressed a different view.

“Oh, I do that,” Brooks confirmed, but with a caveat. Shay Shay questioned his ability to control himself during such scenes, drawing a comparison to acting professionals. “You got to be able to control yourself though, Mo,” she advised. Brooks seemed a bit taken aback, asking for clarification. The implication was that actors must maintain professionalism and not let their personal reactions interfere with the scene.

The discussion touched on the technicalities of filming intimate scenes, including the use of protection or methods to manage physical reactions. Brooks acknowledged that while he’s open to doing sex scenes, he believes the key is control. He even playfully suggested a fantasy co-star, mentioning actress Zoe Saldana.

Brooks also revealed that there are often people on set specifically to ensure everyone’s comfort during intimate scenes. “You know, it’s people that come on the set to make sure that everybody’s comfortable,” he explained. He admitted that avoiding arousal during such scenes seems difficult, referencing the famous scene in “Monster’s Ball” with Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton as an example of intense on-screen chemistry.

Wild ‘N Out Experience

Brooks also reflected on his time on the MTV show “Wild ‘N Out.” He admitted to being very nervous during his first season, describing the experience as intense. “I was scared as I was so scared,” he said. He clarified that the show isn’t just about casual fun, but more like joining a team or a fraternity.

While some games might be known beforehand, Brooks suggested that players don’t know their opponents until they arrive. “You get there, you figure out who your team is, and then y’all go out there and do your thing. But it is improv.” He emphasized that the focus isn’t solely on winning the game, but on being funny within the game’s structure.

Initially, Brooks felt overwhelmed, comparing the experience to boot camp. He even called his mother, considering quitting. “I was like, man, I think I’m going to come home. I ain’t lying.” His mother’s encouragement, however, spurred him on. “She was like, ‘Baby, you made your ass up. You made for this. This is what you wanted.'”

His perseverance paid off. At the end of the season, Nick Cannon texted him, acknowledging his initial nerves but praising his eventual performance. “Once you locked in, you tapped into some superstar shit,” Cannon reportedly said.

Brooks also expressed his belief that Nick Cannon deserves more recognition for his role in launching careers. “He should get flowers every day. Nick put a lot of people on,” Brooks stated emphatically. He noted that many guests who have appeared on “Club Shay Shay” have likely crossed paths with Cannon during their rise to fame.

The Perks of Financial Freedom

When asked about the benefits of newfound wealth, Brooks highlighted the freedom and ability to handle everyday needs without financial stress. “The best thing about it is if I needed four new tires on my car, I can go get four,” he shared. “I can get if I got to get the brakes and the rotors done, I can get all that done. I’m not worried about it.” He appreciates these simple conveniences that many people take for granted.

Brooks is now focusing on making his money work for him. “I want to make my money make some money,” he said. While acknowledging that not all investments will succeed, he is focused on making wise decisions about where to allocate his funds. “It’s about really making the right decisions with the money and, you know, where I want to put it at.”
