Cooper Flagg Opens Up on Rookie Season Challenges, NBA Dreams

A Tough Start, But Lessons Learned

Flagg admitted that his rookie season hasn’t gone as expected. “100%. Yeah. I mean, obviously it’s been tough like you said,” he shared, reflecting on his past success in high school and college where he experienced very few losses. He noted that the mental toll of not achieving the desired team success has been significant. “There’s been times throughout the season where it’s been, you know, really mentally taxing on me.” He also pointed to injuries and other unfortunate events as contributing factors to the team’s struggles. Despite the difficulties, Flagg sees the value in the experience. “I think, you know, hopefully eventually I’ll be able to look back on it and know that I was able to learn a lot from it.”

Stepping into the Spotlight

The young star spoke about being thrust into a larger role than anticipated due to injuries. “I think, you know, coming in, I wasn’t expecting, you know, kind of to be thrown in the fire as much.” Flagg found himself with more responsibility, including playing a point guard role. He credited his college coach, Coach K, for instilling confidence in him as a creator. “Coach K given me that confidence to go out and be a creator and learn the game in a lot of different ways.” This experience has helped him become more comfortable and well-rounded on the court.

Joining Elite Company

McAfee highlighted Flagg’s impressive statistics, noting that he’s one of the few teenagers to average over 20 points per game. The list includes NBA legends like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Carmelo Anthony. “You, Luca, Durant, LeBron, and Carmelo,” McAfee stated, emphasizing the significance of Flagg’s early achievements. Flagg acknowledged the surreal nature of being in such company, especially after his experience with Team USA. “It was incredible. Um, I think for me just having that experience before I had even played in a college game, uh, it just gave me a lot of confidence going into that season.”

The Rookie Experience and Brotherhood

Flagg discussed the adjustment to life as a professional athlete. The biggest changes have been the lifestyle shift, living independently, and managing finances. He also noted the demanding nature of an 82-game season, which requires constant physical and mental preparation. “The length of the season. Like, you know, 82 games is is a lot and you can’t really prepare for it.” Despite the individual challenges, Flagg highlighted the strong bonds he shares with his former Duke teammates, particularly Mark Williams and Jon Scheyer. “We definitely still have that that brotherhood and that connection and that will never go away.” He expressed gratitude for the support from the Duke community and his home state of Maine.

Cooper Flagg remains focused on his development and contributing to the Mavericks’ success. While acknowledging the tough start to his NBA career, he is determined to use the lessons learned to fuel his future performance.
