Mendoza Shines at Pro Day, Eagles QB Talk Dominates
Dan Orlovsky joined The Pat McAfee Show to discuss Fernando Mendoza's impressive Pro Day performance. The conversation quickly shifted to the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback situation, with Orlovsky offering his take on Jalen Hurts.
Mendoza Lights Up Pro Day, Eagles QB Debate Ignites
Fernando Mendoza showed off his arm at his Pro Day in Indiana, but the conversation quickly turned to the Philadelphia Eagles and their quarterback situation. Dan Orlovsky, back on The Pat McAfee Show, weighed in on both topics, offering his expert analysis.
Mendoza’s Pro Day Performance
The Indiana Pro Day was abuzz with activity as quarterback Fernando Mendoza took the field. Orlovsky, despite admitting he’s not a huge Pro Day person, acknowledged Mendoza’s ability to throw the ball well. He noted that most quarterbacks can perform well in these controlled environments, but Mendoza seemed to be throwing the ball downfield effectively, a noted strength.
They also discussed Mendoza’s use of a towel, with Orlovsky speculating it’s to keep his hands dry. The conversation touched on the unusual sight of a packed house for an Indiana Pro Day, highlighting Mendoza’s impact on the program, including a national championship and a Heisman Trophy win.
“I think he’s a good player. No one’s ever said he wasn’t a good player,” Orlovsky stated, defending Mendoza amidst the discussion.
The Pro Day also included moments like a well-executed RPO and several throws that landed perfectly in stride for the receivers. Orlovsky pointed out the importance of watching the receivers’ movements and how the ball is placed, especially when facing certain coverages. He emphasized that these are the details NFL teams will be scrutinizing.
Eagles Quarterback Controversy
The discussion then shifted to the Philadelphia Eagles and their starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts. Orlovsky expressed surprise that this is the second time in six years a similar situation has arisen with their starting quarterback, following the Carson Wentz era. He noted the recurring theme of a disconnect between the organization and the starting QB, with talk of too much power or too many play-calling changes.
Orlovsky admitted that while Hurts might not be a top-10 or top-12 quarterback if placed in a general pool of NFL starters, it’s hard to dismiss his accomplishments. He highlighted Hurts’ track record of two Super Bowl appearances in three years, an MVP award, and a Super Bowl win, making criticisms difficult to reconcile.
“I think the second thing is like, I don’t know the why. I think anybody can be honest about Jaylen Herz and sit there and say if you just took him out and I would tell you I was probably the most critical person of Jaylen Herz when he came out of school and in Philly,” Orlovsky explained.
He also agreed with the sentiment that people are too comfortable speaking negatively about the Eagles’ franchise quarterback, especially given his success. The recurring nature of these quarterback issues in Philadelphia remains a puzzling aspect for Orlovsky.
Orlovsky’s Return and Friendship
The episode also touched on Dan Orlovsky’s recent absence from the internet’s spotlight. He explained that he wasn’t in a good space to handle the online criticism and that he values his friendship with Pat McAfee too much to let it affect their relationship. He clarified a misunderstanding about his comments regarding big games, stating it was a genuine question, not a rhetorical jab.
McAfee and the crew expressed their happiness at having Orlovsky back, emphasizing their support and appreciation for him. They also discussed his absence from league meetings, which he attributed to being told he wasn’t needed, though he had asked to attend.
Looking Ahead
As draft season continues, all eyes will be on how teams evaluate quarterbacks like Mendoza. For the Eagles, the ongoing discussion about Jalen Hurts’ role and performance will undoubtedly continue to be a major storyline throughout the offseason and into the next season. Orlovsky’s insights, as always, provide a valuable perspective on these complex football narratives.
