Daredevil’s New Season Drops Shockers!

Marvel Studios just surprised fans by dropping not one, but two new episodes of Daredevil: Born Again. Episodes two and three arrived together, giving viewers a double dose of street-level action and intrigue. Here’s a deep dive into what happened and what it all means for the Man Without Fear.

Art, Heartbreak, and Bullseye’s Return

Episode two kicks off with a powerful visual. Mysterious graffiti artists are tagging Daredevil’s iconic double ‘D’ logo across the city. These tags soon morph into the words ‘resist’ and ‘rebel,’ showing a growing defiance against something. The art even defaces a statue of Lady Liberty, making her look sick from the mayor’s ‘fascist influence’ by putting Xs over her eyes and a frown on her mouth.

Meanwhile, Detective Cer is recovering from a heart attack, watched over by Daredevil from a rooftop. This scene mirrors an earlier moment in the Born Again story where Matthew Murdock watched a friend die. Thankfully, Cer seems to be okay.

The episode takes a dark turn as Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, is seen in a church. His head is framed by a cross, a symbolic choice given that actor Vincent D’Onofrio has hinted at Bullseye going on a redemption journey this season. Bullseye, played by D’Onofrio, asks a priest about Sister Maggie Grace, who is Matt Murdock’s mother. She’s currently on a sabbatical in Rome. The scene is bathed in a creepy blue light, a visual element tied to Bullseye’s comic book costume and his unsettling influence.

While Bullseye seeking out Sister Maggie is concerning, there’s a hint he might be looking for forgiveness for past actions, like the murder of Father Paul Lantam. But with Bullseye, you never truly know what’s going on in his twisted mind.

Fisk’s Fury and Matt’s Mission

Mayor Fisk is training for a big fight night, but his mood sours when he learns that Bullseye is back. Fisk is understandably nervous, remembering how Bullseye nearly assassinated him last season before Daredevil took the bullet.

Back at Matt Murdock and Karen Page’s hideout, they realize Bullseye spared Daredevil’s life. His plan was to frame Daredevil for the murders of AVTF members. This allows Bullseye to anger Fisk while working towards his own revenge.

Matt and Karen decide to track down a ship’s first mate who might have information about a weapons shipment. However, before they can reach him, a woman named Ariana is arrested. She helped hide the ship’s captain in her restaurant, but the task force didn’t find the first mate.

Councilman Buck Cashman asks Fisk why he doesn’t reveal that Matt Murdock is Daredevil. Fisk has a smart answer: it’s easier to paint the masked Daredevil as a villain than the well-known, heroic lawyer Matt Murdock. To find Matt, Fisk publicly asks the citizens of New York to help locate his ‘hero.’ A poster reveals Matt’s details: 5’10”, dark brown hair, brown eyes, 170 lbs, blind, and uses a cane. It mentions he was last seen saving Fisk at a gala and provides a hotline number.

Secrets and Suspicions

In the office of Deputy Mayor of Communications, Daniel Blake, he and Sheila watch an anonymous YouTuber in a Fisk mask. The YouTuber mocks Fisk for losing a shipment of weapons. Blake, a fan of New York sports teams like the Jets and Knicks, seems to be hiding something. Sheila urges him to tell Fisk about the video, which shows Daredevil near the lost cargo. Blake denies having the footage, but it’s later revealed he lied and had it on his laptop.

Fisk confronts Blake about the leaked footage, showing him the dead body of former Police Commissioner Phil Gallow, whose death Fisk staged as an accident. He also mentions Gallow had a ‘calling card’ from ‘City Without Fear’ on him. Fisk orders Blake to find the leak, who reassures Fisk of his loyalty.

Officer Powell encounters Cole North, who wants back on the task force for revenge. Meanwhile, Fisk sends AVTF agents to Metro General Hospital to visit Cer. These agents insult Cer and his friend McDaniel, but are ultimately killed by Bullseye. Powell goes to Cer’s room, only to find everyone has vanished, saved by Angie Kim.

Fisk orders increased security for his wife, Vanessa, who is worried about Bullseye. Vanessa discusses Bullseye with Buck Cashman, and their conversation has an odd flirtatious vibe. She also talks with Fisk about his desire to expand his influence beyond New York, possibly using the weapons for nationwide initiatives. Vanessa dreams of Bullseye, waking up in fear.

New Allies and Old Demons

Heather Glenn, still dealing with trauma from the serial killer Muse, talks with Vanessa Fisk. Vanessa knows Matt Murdock is alive, despite rumors of his death. Meanwhile, Matt and Karen stake out a salvage operation, and Matt decides he needs to go in as Daredevil.

Angela Del Toro and her aunt Solidad discuss Angela’s uncle, Hector Ayala, the late White Tiger. Angela’s admiration for heroes like Daredevil suggests she might take up the White Tiger mantle herself. Angela’s aunt is arrested, leading Angela to seek help from Kirsten McDuffy at Murdock & McDuffy, where her uncle’s White Tiger amulet is kept.

Daniel Blake suspects BB Urick leaked the footage. Blake is unaware that BB is the ‘City Without Fear’ YouTuber. Sheila feels guilty about Commissioner Gallow’s death, hinting she might betray Fisk later.

At Josie’s bar, Matt and Karen are interrupted by the AVTF. They fight back, and Karen manages to kidnap an agent. The episode ends with this agent in the hideout of Frank Castle, The Punisher.

Episode 3: Justice and Reckoning

‘The Scales and the Sword’ is a fitting title for episode three. It references Lady Justice, symbolizing unbiased justice, and the episode’s events, including vigilante trials and Daredevil’s fight to free a swordsman.

The episode shows AVTF agents on the streets and references a charity fight between Mayor Fisk and a boxer named Matterhorn. Graffiti and city initiatives highlight Fisk’s control.

Back at the Punisher’s safe house, Karen and Matt interrogate the captured AVTF agent, Alan Saunders. Saunders claims he wants to join the resistance, and Daredevil senses he’s telling the truth. Saunders provides an AVTF access card.

The AVTF logo is revealed to be an eagle holding a sword and lightning bolt, with design elements reminiscent of Nazi symbolism, hinting at the task force’s true nature.

Heather Glenn struggles with her inner aggression, stemming from her trauma with Muse. She uses Muse’s mask for exposure therapy, trying to overcome her fear.

Heather meets Kirsten McDuffy at the courthouse. They discuss Matt, with Heather defending his good heart despite his deceptions. The partnership between Kirsten and Matt is questioned, given Matt’s secrets.

Daredevil, with Matt’s enhanced senses, detects Saunders’ truthfulness. Saunders offers an AVTF access card, revealing more about the task force’s potentially sinister design, featuring an eagle with a sword and lightning bolt, echoing historical oppressive regimes.

The episode continues to explore the theme of justice and corruption within the city, setting the stage for further conflict and revelations.
