Congressman Slams DOJ Secrecy on Trump Documents
Congressman Jamie Raskin is criticizing the Justice Department's secrecy surrounding investigations into former President Donald Trump, particularly regarding classified documents. He expressed concern that Trump may have kept documents for personal business interests and called for the release of a special counsel report, contrasting it with past practices. Raskin also condemned alleged efforts to interfere in political campaigns through the release of old investigative files.
Raskin Criticizes Justice Department Over Trump Document Probe
Congressman Jamie Raskin is strongly criticizing the Justice Department for its handling of investigations involving former President Donald Trump, particularly concerning classified documents. Raskin expressed frustration over the department’s alleged secrecy surrounding reports that Trump may have kept classified information for personal business reasons. This comes amid broader concerns about what Raskin calls Trump’s “retribution agenda” and potential interference in ongoing legal and political matters.
Concerns Over Trump’s Motives for Keeping Documents
A key point of contention is a 2023 prosecution memo from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office. Raskin’s committee obtained this document, which suggested that Trump’s motive for retaining classified documents might have been linked to personal business interests. However, the memo was vague, leaving investigators and the public to guess at the specific motives. Some speculate these interests could involve cryptocurrency or dealings with foreign entities, such as Saudi Arabia, which recently provided a significant financial package to Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law.
“Unfortunately, it’s guesswork as to what specific business motives were identified in that memo because it was stated at that level of generality,” Raskin stated. “Some people think it was crypto, some people think it was the Saudis.”
Call for Release of Special Counsel Report
Raskin highlighted that Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report, Volume Two, has not been released to the public. This contrasts with previous special counsel reports, such as those from Robert Mueller and Ken Starr, which were made public. Raskin believes the Justice Department and Trump are pushing to keep this report secret, with Judge Eileen Cannon reportedly issuing an order to that effect. He argues that the public needs to see the findings to understand the full scope of the document case.
The congressman also noted an accidental release of information that revealed stunning details. One such detail involved Trump allegedly taking a top-secret document and showing it to people on an airplane. Only a select few in the government, including the President, are authorized to access such highly classified materials. Raskin feels these “tiny glimpses” are insufficient without the full report.
Allegations of Retaliation and Political Interference
Beyond the classified documents, Raskin addressed what he views as Trump’s ongoing “retribution campaign.” He pointed to efforts to prosecute New York Attorney General Letitia James for a fourth time, while simultaneously offering a large settlement to former Trump advisor Mike Flynn. Flynn had previously pleaded guilty twice to misleading the FBI regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election. Raskin sees these actions as evidence of Trump pursuing perceived enemies while aiding allies.
FBI Director Accused of Political Motivation
A recent report from The Washington Post alleges that FBI Director Cash Rettel is pushing to release a decade-old investigative file concerning Representative Eric Swalwell. This file relates to a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, despite no evidence of wrongdoing by Swalwell himself. The report, which The Washington Post notes it has not independently verified, suggests that some FBI officials fear releasing the file, even with redactions, could harm law enforcement sources and methods.
Raskin condemned this alleged action, calling it “completely outrageous.” He questioned the motive behind releasing a closed, decade-old investigation that resulted in no charges against Swalwell, who is now running for Governor. Raskin suggested that such a move would be an improper interference in a political campaign, potentially violating the Hatch Act.
“It is absurd and the fact that they think that’s okay, demonstrates how far off the rails the Department of Justice is,” Raskin stated. “It just makes no sense at all. Why should the U.S. government be interfering in a political campaign?”
Broader Implications for Democracy
Raskin has previously warned that Trump’s actions, including alleged purges within the Justice Department and FBI of those associated with investigations into him, pose a threat to American democracy. He argues that Trump’s focus on “vengeance and retribution” rather than democratic norms, national security, and public safety could lead the country toward authoritarianism. The ongoing controversies surrounding investigations and alleged political interference only fuel these concerns.
Looking Ahead
The public and congressional leaders like Raskin will be closely watching for any further developments regarding the release of the Special Counsel’s report and the FBI’s actions concerning Representative Swalwell’s file. The upcoming legal proceedings involving Donald Trump and the ongoing scrutiny of the Justice Department’s independence will likely remain central issues in the political landscape.
