Booker: Trump Failing Iran Objectives, Causing Global Crisis
Senator Cory Booker strongly criticized President Trump's Iran policy, labeling it a "presidential blunder" that has worsened regional instability and failed to achieve stated objectives. Booker also addressed domestic issues, condemning the government shutdown and specific ICE practices, while advocating for political unity and a new generation of leadership in his new book, "Stand."
Booker Slams Trump’s Iran Policy, Cites “Presidential Blunder”
Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s foreign policy regarding Iran, calling the administration’s actions one of the “greatest presidential blunders of our time.” Speaking on “Meet the Press,” Booker argued that the stated objectives of the Trump administration, from curbing Iran’s nuclear program to seeking regime change, are not being achieved. Instead, he asserted, the current approach has emboldened Iran, making the regime more extreme and increasing regional instability.
“This president had stated objectives, none of which he’s achieving right now,” Booker stated. He pointed to Iran’s demonstrated ability to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz as evidence of the administration’s failures. The Senator highlighted the significant cost of this policy, noting over $25 billion spent on the conflict, more than 300 people injured, and 13 American lives lost. He expressed deep concern over the deployment of thousands of additional troops to the region without seeking congressional authorization for what he described as a major military engagement.
US-Iran Tensions Escalate Amidst Policy Failures
Booker elaborated on the worsening situation, explaining that despite the objective of regime change, the U.S. has inadvertently led to a more extreme Iranian regime. He referenced comments from his colleague, Senator James Lankford, about preventing terrorist attacks on Americans, but noted that Iranian proxies are now causing more attacks. The Senator drew parallels to the conflict in Ukraine, warning that Iran could develop drone capabilities cheaply, posing a continued threat to American interests and personnel. He cited a recent attack on a U.S. base that severely wounded Americans.
A core criticism from Booker was the lack of transparency and consultation from the Trump administration. “This president is off the chain, and we are in a global crisis of his causing,” he declared. Booker stressed that the President failed to consult with Congress, make his case to the American people, or engage with strategic allies in the region. He characterized the President as a figure of “chaos and corruption,” with these traits now manifesting on a global scale.
“This is a president that’s failing this moment and making matters worse for Americans. He’s a man of chaos and corruption, and we’re seeing that now on a global scale.”
Booker Criticizes Handling of Government Shutdown and ICE Policies
Beyond foreign policy, Senator Booker addressed the ongoing government shutdown and the funding debate for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He criticized the President’s use of the shutdown to pressure Democrats, particularly regarding the funding of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Booker expressed strong opposition to certain ICE practices, including entering homes without judicial warrants and officers wearing face masks during operations.
“I don’t want ICE, masked people jumping out of unmarked cars slamming Americans to the pavement and barreling into their homes without sufficient warrants,” Booker stated emphatically. He also voiced concerns about ICE presence in sensitive locations like churches, schools, hospitals, and courthouses. Booker insisted that essential services like TSA and FEMA should not be held hostage in these political negotiations. He lamented that Republicans had rejected a deal passed by the Senate that would have funded the TSA while withholding additional funds for ICE until policy changes were made.
A Call for Unity and New Leadership
Transitioning to his new book, “Stand,” Booker advocated for a more unifying approach in American politics. He warned against “purity tests” within the Democratic party that can shrink coalitions and hinder progress. “Coalitions of the already converted, your coalition is too small to make big change and too small for what our democracy demands,” he wrote in his book.
Booker called for new leadership and a renewal of American ideals, arguing that the left-right divide is harming the country. He believes that adversaries exploit this division through social media to incite hatred. “It is time for a new vision of our country that’s far more uniting that brings people together and does not open divides,” he urged. He emphasized the need to focus on broader challenges like artificial intelligence and robotics, rather than getting caught up in the current political crises.
Booker on Personal Future and Message of Love
When asked about his own political future, including a potential presidential run, Booker remained open. He shared that his recent marriage to Alexis Reed plays a significant role in his decision-making. He expressed a desire as a couple to contribute to a “renewal” and “redemption of the dream” for all Americans.
Reflecting on his past political messaging, Booker reiterated his commitment to a message of love, even towards adversaries. Citing his Christian faith, he stated, “Love your enemies and love your adversaries and never let anyone pull you so low as to hate him.” He clarified that this does not preclude fighting for his beliefs, but rather means doing so without resorting to hatred. Booker concluded by emphasizing the need for a return to “sacred honor” in American public life and called for leaders who can unite the country rather than divide it.
Booker’s interview painted a stark picture of the current political climate, highlighting perceived failures in foreign policy and domestic governance. His call for unity and a departure from divisive politics offered a glimpse into his vision for the future, leaving his own political aspirations open-ended.
