Ukraine Shares Elite Drone Tactics with British Forces

Ukrainian soldiers, hardened by years of combat, are now sharing their hard-won expertise in drone warfare with the British Army. In a secret training location in Britain, these Ukrainian veterans are teaching allied forces about the realities of modern conflict. This exchange is vital as Ukraine has become a global leader in battlefield drone technology.

Frontline Experience Proves Invaluable

Four years of intense fighting have made Ukrainian soldiers highly sought-after experts. They are passing on their battlefield knowledge to soldiers from Britain and 13 other partner nations. “We tell them about our experience on the battlefield,” said one Ukrainian soldier. He added that their partners have knowledge of drones but haven’t seen them used in such high numbers during actual combat.

“They don’t fully understand how drones affect the battlefield or how intense their impact is,” he explained. This firsthand knowledge is crucial for understanding how warfare has changed.

From Project Manager to Drone Specialist

Artam, a former project manager and long-distance runner in his civilian life, is now a drone specialist on the front lines. He is learning new leadership skills in England. He is training with an Australian soldier on how to better lead small combat units. Artam has been fighting since the Russian invasion began.

“I’m learning how to command my team, give and receive orders, how to properly assess the situation and lead in critical moments,” Artam shared. His experience highlights the rapid evolution of military tactics driven by technology.

Ukraine’s Drone Dominance

Drone technology is now a critical part of modern warfare. Ukraine produced an estimated 4 million drones last year alone, becoming masters of this technology. This makes their insights incredibly valuable to their allies.

The Irish Guards, an elite British Army unit, has spent a full year working closely with Ukrainian soldiers. “The battlefield and the battle front in Ukraine is the only place in the world where there’s the sheer density of drones in the air,” stated a British officer. “We couldn’t replicate that even if we had an unlimited budget.”

He continued, “Next best thing to replicating it is to learn from the people who’ve been there. What I wasn’t expecting was the degree to which it would be an exchange and that we would benefit hugely from the experience.” This shows the reciprocal nature of the training.

Innovation on the Front Lines: 3D Printing Drones

Following the Ukrainian model, all soldiers in the regiment are now training as drone specialists. They are also exploring new technologies, including 3D printers, for use on the front lines. “Technology is advancing rapidly,” noted one instructor. “So the soldiers have to continually adapt the drones and modify them as needed.”

Initially, the plan was to use 3D printers for replacing broken drone parts. “We’ve now gone beyond that and we’re not just doing individual components,” the instructor explained. “We’re actually able to do component parts of new drones and potentially build them from scratch. So, it’s quite an exciting change.” This shows how quickly military technology is evolving.

Returning to the Fight with New Skills

While operating drones is still a training exercise for British soldiers, it is a harsh reality for the Ukrainians. After five weeks of training and knowledge exchange, Artam is heading back to the front. He is better equipped to lead his troops with enhanced skills and motivation.

Artam drew a parallel to his past as an ultramarathon runner. “I know how hard it can be near the end when it feels like you have no strength left,” he said. “You feel like you can’t go any further. But that is exactly the moment when you have to keep moving forward towards the finish line.” This shows his determination.

A Growing Partnership

Over the last four years, more than 62,000 Ukrainian soldiers have received training in Britain. This ongoing collaboration allows Britain and its allies to gain significant advantages from Ukraine’s frontline experience. It’s a powerful example of how international cooperation can adapt to the challenges of modern warfare.
