Golfer Tiger Woods was arrested for DUI and jailed in Florida after a rollover crash on Jupiter Island. While his breathalyzer test showed zero alcohol, Woods refused a urine test and faces charges for DUI with property damage and refusal to submit. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Tiger Woods Arrested for DUI After Florida Crash
Golfer Tiger Woods was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) and jailed in Florida early Monday morning following a single-vehicle rollover crash on Jupiter Island. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. local time, according to the Jupiter Island Police Department. Woods was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not injured in the crash.
Crash Details Emerge
The crash happened about 2.5 miles from the Jupiter Police Department. Responding officers found a dark-colored Land Rover that had rolled over onto its driver’s side. The vehicle had apparently struck the rear of a pressure cleaner trailer being towed by a pickup truck. The driver of the Land Rover, later identified as Tiger Woods, was able to exit the vehicle through the passenger door.
According to the investigation, the pickup truck was traveling northbound on South Beach Road and beginning to turn into a driveway. The driver looked in his mirror and saw the Land Rover approaching at a high speed. As the truck edged to the side of the narrow two-lane road, Woods’s vehicle attempted to overtake it. In doing so, the Land Rover clipped the back of the trailer, causing it to swerve and roll onto the driver’s door. The vehicle then slid northbound past the truck.
Impairment Suspected, Tests Conducted
From the outset, investigators suspected the driver of the Land Rover might be impaired. The Jupiter Police Department requested assistance from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office due to their greater experience with traffic crash investigations. DUI investigators arrived at the scene and observed signs of impairment in Woods.
Woods explained that he had sustained injuries and undergone surgeries, which investigators took into account. However, roadside tests were performed. Based on the results of these tests, Woods was arrested and taken to the Martin County Jail.
Breathalyzer Zero, Urine Test Refused
At the jail, Woods underwent a breathalyzer test, which registered zero. Investigators were not initially suspicious of alcohol being involved, and this proved true. However, when asked to submit to a urinalysis test, Woods refused. This refusal led to additional charges.
The charges filed against Woods are DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Both are misdemeanor charges. While Woods cooperated with investigators, he was careful in his statements and did not try to incriminate himself. He also refused the urine test.
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. Woods himself did not appear to be hurt. The driver of the pickup truck also sustained no injuries. Authorities noted that the narrowness of the road meant that an oncoming vehicle could have resulted in far more serious consequences.
Legal Process and Jail Stay
Florida law requires individuals arrested for DUI to be held for at least eight hours post-arrest. Woods was therefore held at the Martin County Jail for this mandatory period. He was expected to be released on bond afterward.
While Woods was cooperative, he exercised his right to refuse the urine test. This means authorities will not have definitive results about what substance he may have been impaired by at the time of the crash. However, investigators on scene believed impairment was due to medication or drugs, not alcohol.
No Preferential Treatment
Addressing concerns about preferential treatment due to Woods’s high profile, officials stated that the law is applied equally to everyone. While Woods would be kept safe and out of general population to prevent harm, he would still face the legal consequences of his actions. The focus was on ensuring his safety while upholding the law.
Looking Ahead
As Tiger Woods navigates the legal process following his DUI arrest, the focus will remain on the upcoming court proceedings. The refusal to submit to a urine test complicates the determination of impairment, but the existing charges will move forward. The golf world and the public will be watching closely as more details emerge and the case progresses through the justice system.
