Muppets Unleash Laughter: Stars Can’t Hold It Together!
The Muppets have a special talent for making us laugh, but it turns out they’re also experts at making their human co-stars crack up on set. From iconic movie moments to beloved TV show episodes, the fuzzy and famous Muppets have a knack for causing genuine, uncontrollable laughter, leading to some hilarious behind-the-scenes moments. We’re counting down the top 10 times the Muppets completely broke the rest of the cast.
10. Kermit and Fozzie’s Road Trip Banter – The Muppet Movie (1979)
The heart of The Muppet Movie is the friendship between Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear. Director James Frawley wanted their chemistry to feel totally natural. During filming in the English countryside, he let Jim Henson and Frank Oz (as Kermit and Fozzie) improvise. They created comedy gold, even having a funny chat with some cows. You can hear their real surprise and joy as they make each other laugh mid-scene. It’s pure Muppet magic.
9. Jason Segel’s Fanboy Moments – The Muppets (2011)
Jason Segel, a huge Muppet fan, starred in the 2011 movie revival. He loved the Muppets so much that he sometimes struggled to keep a straight face during filming. Outtakes show him losing his composure, especially when interacting with 80s Robot. The robot calmly admits he only has his learner’s permit, and Segel’s immediate reaction is priceless. It’s a great example of how the Muppets’ silly humor can get anyone.
8. Constantine’s Accent Gets Ricky Gervais – Muppets Most Wanted (2014)
Ricky Gervais barely kept it together while filming Muppets Most Wanted. Playing the villain Dominic Bad Guy, he often found himself cracking up. Most of his breaks happened when he was on screen with Constantine, Kermit’s evil twin. Constantine’s funny accent and Matt Vogel’s sharp improv made it almost impossible for Gervais not to laugh. Honestly, who could blame him? It’s hard not to laugh at such a ridiculous character.
7. Bobo the Bear’s Remote Mix-Up – Muppets from Space (1999)
Human actors often play it straight to make Muppet humor funnier. Jeffrey Tambor, as the stern villain, was supposed to be all menace in Muppets from Space. But even he had trouble during one scene. When his character, Agent Singer, asks for a remote, Bobo the Bear hilariously misunderstands and thinks he said ‘goat’. The humor was so unexpected that Tambor couldn’t stop smiling, and even the puppeteer struggled to hold back laughter.
6. David Arquette’s Flirting Fail – It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie (2002)
Even supporting Muppets can steal the show. In this holiday movie, Daniel the Angel, played by David Arquette, has a funny interaction with Howard Tubman. Tubman casually asks if Daniel is a dancer, and you can see Arquette’s smile start to break through. In another take, Tubman compliments Daniel and even asks about his pants size. Arquette couldn’t hide his amusement, and the scene had to be cut short.
5. Gonzo’s Jump Scare Backfires – Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)
This spooky special had some genuinely funny moments. Before a musical number, the host, played by Will Arnett, tries to jump scare Gonzo and Pepe. Their over-the-top screams made Arnett laugh instantly. In another take, Gonzo’s puppeteer, Dave Goelz, breaks when Arnett starts talking. Even the threat of a prank was enough to send everyone into hysterics, proving the Muppets’ humor is infectious.
4. Scrooge’s Rare Smile – The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Michael Caine played Ebenezer Scrooge with serious sincerity in The Muppet Christmas Carol. He stayed in character through songs and slapstick. However, during a festive musical number, the Ghost of Christmas Present accidentally smacks him in the face. Caine fought to keep his composure, holding onto Scrooge’s dignity for a few seconds. You can hear the crew laughing before he finally gives in. It’s a rare and wonderful moment to see Scrooge crack a smile.
3. Prince’s Hilarious Guest Spot – Muppets Tonight (late 1990s)
Superstar Prince blended perfectly into the Muppet chaos during his visit to Muppets Tonight. In one sketch, a Muppet character named Gary Kena botches a line, and Prince immediately bursts out laughing. He then playfully copied Gary’s movements, turning the mistake into pure comedy. Later, while writing a song, he broke again while talking to Clifford and Rizzo. His visible delight made him one of the show’s most memorable guests.
2. Miss Piggy’s Absurd Confession – The Muppet Movie (1979)
The chemistry between Kermit and Miss Piggy was undeniable from the start. In early camera tests for The Muppet Movie, Jim Henson and Frank Oz created magic without a full script. While Kermit remained calm, Piggy was dramatic. She casually confessed to hurting Miss Mousie in strange ways, even admitting to cutting her in half. Henson stammered, and Oz added extra flair, showing how sharp their timing was. You could see Henson fighting laughter, proving the Muppets’ humor worked even in rehearsal.
1. Swedish Chef vs. Chicken – The Muppet Show
Some of the best moments on The Muppet Show were unplanned. In one classic bit, the Swedish Chef tries to play basketball with a chicken. Jim Henson performed the Chef as he repeatedly missed the hoop. The Chef’s gibberish got more frantic, and the chicken’s squawks sounded more tired. The climax came when the chicken got stuck in the net. Everyone on set struggled not to lose it. It’s simple slapstick, but the chaotic energy made it unforgettable.
