Steph White’s Son’s Sweet Basketball Surprise!
The NCAA Women’s Tournament is heating up as we head into the Sweet 16. Big games are on the horizon, including Vanderbilt vs. Notre Dame, Yukon vs. North Carolina, UCLA vs. Minnesota, and Duke vs. LSU. All these matchups will be shown on ESPN. College basketball analyst Stephanie White joined us to talk about the exciting games and a heartwarming moment involving her son.
South Carolina vs. Oklahoma: A Pace Battle
Stephanie White is set to call the highly anticipated rematch between South Carolina and Oklahoma on Saturday. Oklahoma won their first meeting in overtime, but South Carolina is favored by 17.5 points this time. White expects a fast-paced game, noting both teams are among the top three in the country for pace. “It’s going to be exciting first and foremost because these are two teams who really want to play with pace,” she said.
The key for South Carolina will be defending the three-point line. Oklahoma loves to shoot threes early and often. If they get hot from beyond the arc, South Carolina could struggle to keep up, even with their own fast pace. “Certainly do not want to trade twos for threes,” White explained. She also believes South Carolina needs to force turnovers, as they did in their previous game, scoring 28 points off turnovers. “South Carolina is a dominant defensive team, so they’ve got to find ways to get some easy buckets in transition and get multiple possessions,” she added.
Can Anyone Stop Yukon?
Yukon has been dominant so far in the tournament, winning their first two games convincingly as they defend their title. The question on everyone’s mind is: who can stop them? White sees two main challengers.
“Texas, number one. I would always give an outside look to South Carolina certainly because they have the experience, they’ve been there before,” White stated. However, she has doubts about South Carolina’s offense against Yukon’s efficiency. “I just don’t think this South Carolina team has enough offensive firepower to keep up with Yukon,” she admitted.
A Wholesome Basketball Revelation
A delightful story shared by Candace Story Lee, Vanderbilt’s athletic director and former women’s basketball coach, has captured the attention of many. The story is about Stephanie White’s son and his innocent surprise about who plays basketball.
White recalled the moment vividly. “It was a true story. He was about three years old and it was the first time I was taking him to an Indiana Pacers game,” she said. Her son had grown up around the Indiana Fever, her former team, attending practices and games. But seeing the men play for the first time sparked a unique question.
“He just looked at me and he said, ‘Mommy, boys play basketball, too.’ And I just got the biggest kick out of that,” White shared with a laugh. This moment highlights the importance of exposure. “It’s about exposure. It’s about who they’re around,” she emphasized. Now, her children are deeply involved in women’s basketball, texting friends about college and WNBA games. “They’re so ingrained in women’s basketball and women’s sports culture. I absolutely love it,” White beamed.
Caitlin Clark’s Hidden Talent
Beyond her incredible basketball skills, Caitlin Clark has revealed another talent: photography. White confirmed Clark’s passion for photography, noting she often had her camera with her during games.
“She’s really talented. And unfortunately, Caitlin was off the floor a lot last season,” White said, referencing Clark’s time on the bench. “I did know that she had this skill set because she had her camera with her everywhere that she went.” White even recalled Clark taking a great photo of her and her kids during warm-ups before a game in Washington.
“She has that with her everywhere. So, she’s got a budding career in photography,” White added. Her ability to capture moments off the court shows another dimension to her already impressive profile. “Well, we also know she has a good eye, right?” the interviewer asked, to which White enthusiastically agreed.
Looking Ahead
Fans can look forward to White’s commentary on the South Carolina-Oklahoma game on Saturday at 5 PM ET on ESPN, alongside Courtney, Chris, and Violet. The Sweet 16 promises exciting basketball action, and heartwarming stories like White’s son’s are a beautiful reminder of the sport’s growing reach and impact.
