Government Shutdown Sparks Fury, Exposes Deep Democratic Divides
Senator John Fetterman criticized the recent government shutdown for punishing federal workers like TSA agents and creating chaos. He also admitted past Democratic calls to eliminate the Senate filibuster were a mistake, highlighting a need for bipartisan cooperation and honesty in politics.
Government Shutdown Sparks Fury, Exposes Deep Democratic Divides
A recent government shutdown has plunged the United States into chaos, leaving essential workers unpaid and travelers facing long lines at airports. Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, spoke out against the shutdown, calling it a wrong move regardless of who initiates it. He highlighted the punishment faced by TSA agents and other federal employees, many of whom earn around $50,000 a year and rely on their paychecks.
Fetterman Criticizes Shutdown’s Impact on Workers
Senator Fetterman expressed frustration that the shutdown, aimed at influencing immigration policy, has had zero impact on agencies like ICE. Instead, it has hurt hardworking Americans, leading to food insecurity for millions and leaving federal employees without pay. He specifically mentioned TSA agents who are angry and exasperated, questioning why such actions are taken against people who should be supported by their government.
Debate Over Leverage and Immigration Policy
The conversation also touched upon the leverage Democrats have in negotiations. Fetterman argued that Democrats had little leverage because ICE already had the necessary funding from a previous bill he did not vote for. He pointed to the confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security as an example of a policy he disagreed with, noting that Mayorkas’s tenure has been marked by a border crisis. However, Fetterman stated he believes Mayorkas is committed to border security and working with him was a choice he made.
“We had no leverage over it. And now they haven’t agreed to any significant kinds of changes that we were demanding.”
Shifting Political Alliances and Public Perception
Interestingly, Fetterman noted that he faces blowback from parts of the Democratic Party for his voting record but also finds himself more popular with Republicans than expected. He attributes this to misinformation and his clear stance on certain issues, including his strong support for Israel. Despite voting against some major Republican-backed bills, his bipartisan appeal, or lack thereof with some Democrats, is a confusing aspect of his political standing.
Concerns Over Iran and International Stability
The discussion also shifted to international affairs, particularly the situation in Iran. Fetterman expressed confusion over the ongoing conflict, describing the Iranian regime as cowardly for firing random drones at civilians rather than engaging militarily. He questioned the leadership of Iran, noting the Ayatollah has not been seen in months. Fetterman believes the Iranian military apparatus has been severely weakened and criticized media for not demanding proof of life from the leader.
The Filibuster Debate and Political Pragmatism
A significant portion of the interview focused on the filibuster in the Senate. Fetterman admitted that he and many Democrats were wrong to advocate for eliminating the filibuster in the past. He now believes the filibuster is important, preventing the Senate from becoming a smaller, more chaotic version of the House where one party could ram through legislation. He stated that many Republicans agree on this point and would defend the filibuster, and he counts himself among them, finding his past position to be a mistaken one.
“We all of all of the Democrats, including myself. We were so wrong, you know, in my in my campaign in 22 was like. The filibuster. You know, let’s eliminate the filibuster. We were all so wrong.”
A Call for Honesty and Bipartisan Cooperation
The interviewer praised Fetterman for admitting he was wrong about the filibuster, calling it refreshing and a sign of conviction. This admission was seen as validating the positions of senators like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, who had previously defended the filibuster. The interview concluded with a shared sentiment that government shutdowns are absurd and that finding ways to work together is essential, especially for the well-being of ordinary citizens.
