Houston Police Fatally Shoot Armed Suspect in Southwest Incident
An officer-involved shooting in Southwest Houston on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the death of an armed suspect. The incident occurred around 3:52 p.m. near the intersection of Renwick and Glenmont, according to a briefing from the Houston Police Department (HPD). Assistant Chief Lewis Menendez Sierra confirmed that the suspect, who was carrying a handgun in a pink purse, is deceased. The involved officer sustained a minor graze wound and is reported to be in good condition.
Details Emerge from Preliminary Investigation
The situation began when HPD received a call about a male walking westbound on Glenmont. The caller reported the individual was carrying a pink purse and a black handgun, which he had placed inside the purse. An officer was dispatched to the location and arrived within minutes. Upon observing the suspect matching the description and carrying the pink purse, the officer ordered him to put the purse down.
According to Assistant Chief Menendez Sierra, the suspect ignored the officer’s commands. He then reached into the purse, pulled out a black handgun, and pointed it directly at the officer. At this point, the officer discharged his weapon, firing several rounds at the suspect. The suspect returned fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire. The officer sought cover behind his patrol car during this exchange.
Suspect Flees, Officer Pursues
Following the gunfire, the suspect ran into a nearby apartment complex. The officer pursued the suspect, firing additional shots. The suspect was struck multiple times and pronounced deceased at the scene. The officer, who was working alone at the time, suffered a graze wound to his abdomen. He was able to render aid to the suspect before medical assistance arrived, though the suspect had already succumbed to his injuries.
“Our officer observed the male walking westbound on Glen Mount, just like the call had described, carrying a pink purse. Our officer got out of the vehicle, began to give the male bural commands to please put the purse down. He told the male to put the purse down several times. The male ignored those commands and then reached into the purse and pulled out a black handgun. He pulled out the black handgun, pointed directly at our officer. At that time, our officer pulled out his pistol and began to fire rounds at the suspect. The suspect returned fire.”
Officer’s Actions and Investigations Underway
Assistant Chief Menendez Sierra emphasized that the information shared was preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progresses. He confirmed that the officer was alone when he encountered the suspect, and backup had not yet arrived. The officer’s body-worn camera captured the incident, and this footage is expected to be released within 30 days, as is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
The incident is being investigated by multiple agencies, including HPD’s Internal Affairs Division, the District Attorney’s office, and the Homicide Division. The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave for a standard period of three days while these investigations proceed. The Chief noted that the suspect’s actions dictated the course of events, stating, “his actions dictated what happened today.” He also expressed gratitude that no other individuals, including civilians or other officers, were seriously injured during the intense exchange.
Community Impact and Future Steps
The shooting occurred in a busy area with people present, raising concerns about potential civilian casualties. Officials expressed relief that the officer’s quick actions and the subsequent events did not result in further injuries. While there were reports of a school nearby, officials stated they did not see children present at the immediate scene. Further investigation will explore any potential history the suspect may have had with law enforcement or similar incidents.
As the investigations continue, the community awaits the full details of the incident. The release of the body-worn camera footage is a key next step for transparency. HPD officials stressed the dangers officers face daily, responding to calls without knowing what they will encounter.
