Canady’s Power Fuels Texas Tech’s Title Chase
NiJaree Canady, a dominant force at Texas Tech, is leading her team's charge for a national championship. With a stellar ERA, impressive home run power, and significant NIL backing, Canady is rewriting the narrative for college softball. Her championship mindset, honed by last year's World Series appearance, is now fueling a team eager to overcome the pressure of being ranked number two.
Canady’s Dominance Powers Texas Tech’s Title Chase
The air crackled with anticipation, not just for Opening Day in Major League Baseball, but for the rising stars in college softball. Jess Mendoza, a familiar voice in the game, introduced a guest who’s already making massive waves: NiJaree Canady. Dubbed a “badass” by Mendoza, Canady isn’t just a senior at Texas Tech; she’s a force of nature. Last year, she posted an incredible 1.1 earned run average (ERA) and led her team in home runs, earning her the titles of Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. Many see her as the Shohei Ohtani of softball, a true two-way talent with dreams of being the number one overall pick in the upcoming AUSL draft and potentially representing the USA in the 2028 Olympics.
Before diving deep into softball, the conversation touched on a lighter, yet equally important, Opening Day tradition: ballpark food. Mendoza admitted her go-to is the classic Dodger Dog, a choice fueled by pure nostalgia, even though she doesn’t typically enjoy hot dogs. “They just taste different there,” she mused, highlighting the unique magic of a ballpark meal. Canady’s pick was simpler: nachos with cheese, a reliable stadium staple. The hosts also debated the merits of different hot dog styles, with one championing the Chicago style, complete with celery salt and pickle, but no tomatoes.
NIL Deals Spark New Era for Softball
Shifting back to the diamond, the discussion turned to Canady’s transfer to Texas Tech and the impact of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals on the sport. Canady believes her move and the attention it brought have been “incredible” for softball, drawing more eyes to the game. “Female sports have been blowing up in general, but just to get more eyes on softball specifically,” she explained, emphasizing her lifelong love for the sport.
Mendoza, who has followed the game closely, expressed deep emotion seeing the evolution of women’s sports, particularly in softball, following similar growth in basketball and soccer. She praised Canady as a deserving athlete who has consistently performed at the highest level since her freshman year. “Pitcher of the year, player of the year, and you can repeat it. You sign a million dollars and that pressure for a 19, 20, 21-year-old, how she’s handled it, how humble she is, how much she’s about her team, but the fact that she’s continued to have that success is something that you just don’t see,” Mendoza stated.
Building a Dynasty at Texas Tech
What makes Canady’s success even more remarkable is her decision to join Texas Tech, a program not historically known as a powerhouse. Mendoza asked what drew Canady to the Red Raiders. “Part of it was just seeing the culture that was being built and just the players other players Coach Glasco brought in,” Canady replied. She highlighted Coach Glasco’s clear goal: to win a national championship and reach the Women’s College World Series. “He wants to win a national championship. He wants to go to the World Series. So, that was one of his main goals and I feel like we all bought in and we ended up there last year,” she added.
This wasn’t just Canady’s vision; it was a team effort. Last year marked a historic season for Texas Tech, as they won their first-ever regional game, advanced to Super Regionals, and made it to the Women’s College World Series. This was a monumental leap for a program that had never achieved such success before. The presence of high-profile fans like Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany at the games underscored the growing excitement around the team. Canady herself was a huge part of this, leaving Stanford to make a statement at Texas Tech. The team’s momentum continued with seven massive transfers this year, including first-team All-American pitcher and hitter Caitlyn Terry, who will now share the load with Canady, easing some of the pressure on the star senior.
Championship Mentality: From Underdogs to Favorites
The conversation then explored how a player like Canady can shift a team’s mindset. Mendoza noted that while many Texas Tech players were new to high-pressure situations last year, their World Series experience, even in defeat, has changed them. “They were one win away from winning the national championship. And honestly, it was almost like they just weren’t ready because it was a year of firsts. Now the team is hungry and they know there is pressure because Niga is a senior,” Mendoza explained. The team’s hunger and Canady’s experience in high-stakes games are invaluable.
Canady acknowledged the shift in expectations. “Last year we were kind of the underdogs going in, but this year we’re ranked number two right now. So there’s definitely that target on our backs,” she said. Despite the added pressure, she believes the sting of falling short last year will only make them stronger. “We obviously fell short last year, but I feel like that just makes us better for this coming year,” Canady stated confidently.
Beyond Softball: Canady’s Versatility
The interview also revealed another facet of Canady’s athletic prowess: she was a standout basketball player in high school. A first-team All-State selection and a four-star recruit, her basketball talents were significant. To showcase her versatility, the hosts playfully challenged her broadcasting skills, asking for her take on the Women’s NCAA Tournament. After a moment’s thought, Canady picked LSU to win it all, admitting a slight bias after they recently defeated her team.
As the segment concluded, Mendoza urged viewers to tune into the softball postseason in late May and early June. She highlighted the exceptional senior class entering the AUSL draft and specifically pointed to Canady as a must-watch talent in the Women’s College World Series and the lead-up games. “It’s going to be an exciting year,” Mendoza promised, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the softball season.
