UConn Rolls! Fud Explodes for 34 in Sweet 16 Berth
Ayana Fud poured in a career-high 34 points as UConn dominated Syracuse 98-45 to reach their 31st straight Sweet 16. UCLA and Lauren Betts also advanced easily, while Virginia stunned Iowa in overtime. UConn remains the favorite to win it all.
UConn Dominates Syracuse, Advances to Sweet 16
The UConn Huskies are showing everyone why they’re a top contender. They absolutely crushed Syracuse with a 98-45 victory, punching their ticket to the Sweet 16 for the 31st consecutive time. This marks an incredible streak of reaching the regional semifinals.
Star player Ayana Fud was on fire, even with her nails trimmed! She scored a career-high 34 points, hitting a scorching 8-of-11 from three-point range. Fud’s performance was so dominant that even a funny story about her clipping her nails at halftime became a talking point. “Coach told us the funny story about clipping your nails. Have you cut these nails? And is that why you’re hot?” Fud was asked at halftime. She replied, “I did. I trimmed them. Had a nail file yesterday or yeah, yesterday before uh practice and I guess he was right. I had to trim my nails.” Her hands looked just fine as she continued to sink three-pointers, showing her incredible shooting ability.
UConn went on a massive 31-0 scoring run against Syracuse, who seemed to be tired of facing such a tough opponent in their part of the bracket. Fud’s ability to hit shots from anywhere, including deep threes and transition drives, made her impossible to stop. This win once again shows the Huskies are a team to watch closely.
UCLA and Lauren Betts Also Cruise to Sweet 16
It wasn’t just UConn showing its strength. UCLA also made a powerful statement, easily defeating their opponent to reach the Sweet 16. Lauren Betts was a force in the paint, leading the Bruins to an 18-point lead early on.
Betts finished with a career-high 35 points. She was unstoppable down low, dominating the game with her size and skill. Teammates like Kiki Rice and Londynn Betts also contributed, with Betts hitting key three-pointers to extend the lead. Even when Oklahoma State tried to fight back, UCLA’s defense, led by Betts’ presence, was too much. The final score saw UCLA advance with ease, highlighting their status as a serious threat.
Virginia Stuns Iowa in Thrilling Upset
In the most exciting game of the day, the number 10 seed Virginia Cavaliers pulled off a huge upset, knocking off number two seed Iowa in overtime with a final score of 74-67. This win makes Virginia the first double-digit seed to reach the Sweet 16 since 2022.
Virginia fought back from a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Paris Clark was a major reason for the comeback, scoring eight straight points herself to bring the Cavaliers within one point. Kamora Johnson also stepped up, hitting a three-pointer to tie the game with just two minutes left. The game went back and forth, with both teams having chances to win in regulation.
In overtime, Virginia’s defense locked down, and they managed to pull ahead. Clark finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Johnson added 28 points. This remarkable comeback win shows the unpredictable nature of tournament play and Virginia’s resilience on the road.
UConn’s Dominance and the Road Ahead
The tournament has seen some incredible blowouts, with UConn being a prime example. They’ve had seven games where they scored more than double their opponent’s points in the Round of 32 or later. This statistic alone puts their dominance into perspective.
When asked about UConn’s strength, analyst Andrea Carter highlighted the versatility of Sarah Strong and the shooting prowess of Ay Fud. “Sarah Strong’s versatility makes UConn so tough to game for,” Carter explained. “Her ability to knock down threes opens up the floor. She can put the ball on the floor. She can get into the mid-range game.” Carter also pointed out Fud’s record-breaking three-point shooting, noting she has the highest career three-point percentage for UConn in the last decade.
Carter also credited the team’s role players like KK Arnold and Ashlyn Shade, who have Final Four experience from their freshman year. Combined with coach Geno Auriemma’s experience and the talent of their two superstars, this UConn team is considered a strong favorite to win it all.
Who Can Challenge UConn?
Despite UConn’s impressive run, a few teams are seen as potential challengers. Carter mentioned South Carolina, UCLA, and Texas as teams with the talent, experience, and depth to compete.
“South Carolina has the talent, they have the athleticism, they have the experience, they have the depth,” Carter stated. “UCLA has talent, athleticism, experience, depth, and a powerhouse on the inside. And Lauren Betts, who has shown more mobility this season that would be huge in a game against UConn.” Texas is also in the mix thanks to the play of Madison Booker and their strong defense.
However, even with these strong contenders, Carter still has UConn winning the championship. The Huskies’ combination of talent, experience, and coaching makes them a formidable force in this year’s tournament.
