Trump Rejects DHS Funding Deal, Cites Voter ID Demands
President Trump has rejected a bipartisan deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security, including the TSA, demanding his SAVE Act for voter ID be included. Congressman Brendan Boyle criticized the move, calling it "holding TSA hostage" and expressing concern for unpaid workers and anxious travelers.
Trump Rejects DHS Funding Deal, Cites Voter ID Demands
President Donald Trump has rejected a bipartisan deal that would have fully funded the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and FEMA. The proposed agreement, brokered by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, aimed to end the ongoing government shutdown’s impact on these critical agencies. However, Trump insists that any deal must include his proposed SAVE Act, which mandates voter identification with a picture and proof of citizenship for all federal elections. This decision has prolonged the shutdown’s effects, leaving TSA employees unpaid and travelers facing significant delays at airports nationwide.
Congressman Boyle Voices Concerns Over Shutdown’s Impact
Democratic Congressman Brendan Boyle, the ranking member of the House Budget Committee, expressed deep concern over the current situation. He praised TSA employees for continuing to work without pay, calling their dedication remarkable. “First, I want to commend all of the TSA employees who are showing up for work despite this being now the second go-around of them not getting paid for the work that they’re doing,” Boyle stated.
Boyle urged the President to accept the offered agreement, which he described as bipartisan. “I want to urge this President to accept the agreement, the bipartisan I think there is an agreement that has been offered to him in which we would fully fund TSA, fully fund FEMA, fully fund most of DHS, but segregate or put off to the side ICE and while further negotiations have to happen in terms of the reforms that are so critically needed,” he explained.
“Stop Holding TSA Hostage,” Says Congressman
The Congressman directly addressed the President’s tactics, stating, “Stop holding TSA hostage, Mr. President. Stop holding hostage the American people who need to fly.” Boyle argued that Trump’s insistence on the SAVE Act, which he believes has no chance of passing Congress, is the sole reason for the ongoing disruption.
He believes that Trump’s actions are directly responsible for the long security lines travelers are experiencing. “Donald J. Trump. So two sources, to your point about John Thune, two sources tell me now that President Trump actually rejected Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s alternative plan to fund DHS,” Boyle revealed.
Trump Links Homeland Security to Voter ID
President Trump, speaking shortly before Boyle’s remarks, explained his position. “So I’m tying homeland security into voter identification with picture and proof of citizenship in order to vote,” Trump said. “And those two items are the most important thing having to do with homeland security. So it should be part of the Homeland Security bill.” He then requested that Republican senators support this measure immediately.
The President’s comments, which included a religious reference, were met with strong criticism from Congressman Boyle. “Yeah, well, it’s just, I mean, first invoking the name of Jesus for this sort of thing is frankly offensive and sacrilegious to any person of faith, myself included,” Boyle responded. “As far as his previous comments before that bizarre ending there, he makes it very clear, I think, that it is his insistence on an action on the SAVE Act that is the reason why we’re here.”
Traveler Anxiety High Amidst Shutdown Uncertainty
The ongoing shutdown has created significant anxiety for both travelers and TSA agents. Many Americans are unsure whether to book summer vacations or make travel plans. “The level of anxiety is high. Can you give them any hope that this is going to be… I thought that was a bipartisan agreement was brewing and I thought today we were going to have good news until Donald Trump threw the United States to show us this curveball,” Boyle lamented.
Hope for a Swift Resolution?
Despite the current impasse, Congressman Boyle expressed a sliver of hope, citing the President’s tendency to change his mind. “So if we are really reaching to attempt to be hopeful on this, it’s that as evidence by the President is a president who constantly changes his mind for no apparent reason at all,” he noted. “So the idea that we could be right back here 24 hours from now I don’t think it’s a bipartisan compromise, I do hold out some hope that that could perhaps happen.”
The situation remains fluid, with the impact of the shutdown continuing to affect essential government services and the daily lives of many Americans. The focus now shifts to whether President Trump will reconsider his stance or if further negotiations can break the deadlock.
