London Ambulances Torched in Suspected Antisemitic Hate Crime
Four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in London were deliberately set on fire early Monday morning. British police are investigating the incident in Golders Green as a hate crime, specifically targeting the Jewish community. The attack has been widely condemned by political leaders and community figures.
Leaders Condemn ‘Despicable Act of Evil’
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer immediately denounced the attack on social media, calling it a “deeply shocking and antisemitic arson attack.” He stated, “My thoughts are with the Jewish community who are waking up this morning to this horrific news. Antisemitism has no place in our society.” Starmer emphasized that an attack on the Jewish community is an attack on everyone and vowed to fight against antisemitism.
Wes Streeting, a Member of Parliament, described the act as “shocking, cowardly, and a despicable act of evil.” Speaking from the scene, he highlighted that the attack targeted the heart of London’s Jewish community and an ambulance service dedicated to providing emergency care. “The police are working at pace to catch those responsible,” Streeting assured, adding that the Prime Minister and Home Secretary would address the matter further.
Community Support and Replacement Efforts
In the immediate aftermath, the London Ambulance Service pledged to provide additional support to the affected charity, Hatzola. “Our colleagues will be providing support to the team here in Golders Green to make sure that we don’t skip a beat when it comes to responding to emergency callouts,” Streeting confirmed.
To ensure services continue without interruption, four replacement ambulances were set to be provided by Tuesday morning, with plans to permanently replace the destroyed vehicles. “The Jewish community should not be left footing the bill for this despicable attack,” Streeting stated. He stressed that the entire country would stand with the Jewish community against such hatred.
Addressing Fear and Promoting Solidarity
Streeting acknowledged that the attack was designed to instill fear within the Jewish population in London and across the country. He recognized the pain and anxiety such incidents cause for Jewish people. “The aim of these attackers is clear: they want Jewish people in this country to live smaller lives, to live less Jewish lives, to be less visible as Jewish people, to fear going about Jewish life,” he explained.
However, he expressed confidence that the Jewish community would not be intimidated. Streeting called on all “decent-minded people” to stand up and speak out against antisemitic hatred. He emphasized the importance of practical solidarity, ensuring that emergency services remain operational. The message to the community was clear: “If you need help from the ambulance service today, seek it. We will be there for you.”
Combating Hatred at Its Source
The conversation also touched upon the need to address the root causes of such antisemitic incidents. While acknowledging the role of security measures like CCTV and increased security funding, officials stressed that these are not the sole solutions. “We also have to deal with this hatred at its source. We have to confront and beat the evil ideas that are permeating in our society,” Streeting urged.
He highlighted that antisemitism is an ancient hatred that remains active. “All of us, particularly those who are not Jewish, have to wake up, stand up, and work with our Jewish friends and neighbors in confronting and defeating this despicable hatred,” he implored. This sentiment was echoed by other officials who stressed vigilance and speaking out against such vile hatred.
Hatzola Continues Service Amidst Adversity
Representatives from Hatzola, the volunteer ambulance service, conveyed their deep gratitude for the support received. Despite the shocking attack, their operations continued uninterrupted. “Our phones haven’t stopped. Our volunteers are responding to call outs and our service continues unbroken. We have no time to grieve,” a spokesperson stated. They highlighted that their sole purpose is to save lives and that they would continue to do so.
The organization confirmed its strong partnership with the wider NHS, emphasizing the vital role Hatzola plays in North London. The loaned ambulances from the London Ambulance Service and St. John’s Ambulance were crucial in maintaining their emergency response capabilities. Hatzola’s message to the community was one of resilience: “Our schools are open, our shores are full, our shops, cafes and restaurants busy. Life goes on.”
Looking Ahead
The investigation into the arson attack is ongoing, with authorities seeking information from the public. Political leaders have pledged continued support for the Jewish community and reiterated their commitment to combating antisemitism in all its forms. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and collective action against hate crimes, emphasizing that the fight against antisemitism requires the participation of all members of society.
