Iran’s Missile Range Grows: A Direct Threat to the UK?
Iran's missile range has dramatically increased, capable of reaching nearly 4,000 km, a distance that includes the United Kingdom. IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani stated that actions, not words, reveal Iran's true intentions, contrasting official claims with recent missile firings. Israel's military goals focus on degrading Iran's nuclear and missile capabilities to ensure its own security.
Iran’s Missile Capabilities Expand Dramatically
Just days before a major conflict erupted, Iranian officials stated they did not possess missiles with a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers, and had no interest in developing them. However, recent actions have dramatically contradicted these claims. A missile was fired nearly 4,000 kilometers, a distance that reaches from Iran all the way to the United Kingdom.
Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, an IDF spokesperson, highlighted this stark contrast between words and deeds. “We’ve learned as Israelis in the last 3 years to look at actions and capabilities and not words,” Shoshani stated. He pointed out that Iranian officials claimed they didn’t want missiles over 2,000 km, then fired one almost double that range. “Their actions answer better than any type of statement,” he added.
Intelligence and Intentions Revealed
Shoshani emphasized that the impact sites and casualties from such launches are overwhelmingly civilian. “We look at actions. We look at capabilities because words can be deceiving,” he explained. Israel has shared intelligence with partners in the U.S. and the UK, showing Iran’s secret efforts to extend the reach of its ballistic missiles. This capability allows Iran to project power far beyond its immediate borders.
The IDF spokesperson also noted Iran’s public declarations of hostility. “They say death to Israel, death to America, and death to England,” he remarked, suggesting that both their words and actions clearly signal their intentions. The launch of a long-range missile, rather than being an Israeli fabrication, was presented as Iran’s own action revealing the truth.
Implications for Global Security
The expanding missile range raises significant questions about potential threats to countries far from the Middle East. Shoshani suggested that if Iran has the capability to reach a nation, that nation could find itself in a conflict with Iran, even without choosing to engage. He pointed to Gulf countries, Cyprus, Turkey, and Azerbaijan as examples of nations that receive missiles from Iran without necessarily being at war with them.
When asked if the UK should become more involved, Shoshani deferred, stating, “Each country should act according to their interests.” However, he stressed the importance of understanding Iran’s capabilities. “If Iran has the capability to reach you, you might be in a war with Iran without choosing to be in a war with Iran,” he reiterated.
Israel’s Military Goals
Shoshani clarified Israel’s objectives, stating they are not seeking regime change as a direct military goal. Instead, their aims are to remove existential threats to Israel. This involves degrading Iran’s nuclear capabilities and its ballistic missile program, which is being developed at an alarming pace. Israel has conducted strikes not only on missile stockpiles and launch sites but also on production facilities.
“We’re fighting along a large set of targets to weaken the Iranian regime. That would set the conditions for regime change, but regime change is not a military goal,” Shoshani explained. He added that while military degradation can create conditions for political change, it doesn’t directly achieve it.
Conflict in Lebanon and Civilian Casualties
The discussion also addressed the ongoing conflict in Lebanon, where Israel is engaged with Hezbollah, described as Iran’s extension and one of its largest proxies. Shoshani stated that Israel is not fighting the state or people of Lebanon but rather Hezbollah, which he said chose to join the war against Israel and opened a new front.
He explained that targets like a bridge over the Latal River, though civilian infrastructure, can be considered military targets if used by a military force to advance its activities. “It is considered a military installation if a military force is using it to promote their terror activity,” he argued. Shoshani defended the targeting process, noting it requires rigorous intelligence, surveillance, and legal approval to strike specific targets vital for terrorist operations.
Defending Against Threats
Shoshani highlighted that Hezbollah has fired approximately 2,500 rockets, UAVs, and missiles towards Israel, using crossing points and transport networks to move their forces and weapons. He stated that preventing this movement is necessary and that Israel acts according to international law on very specific targets. He also mentioned that the UK supports the decision that there cannot be a presence of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Addressing concerns about civilian casualties, including children and health workers, Shoshani reiterated that Israel is defending itself against a terror organization that chose to fight. “There is no war between Israel and Lebanon. Israel is fighting a terrorist organization that said we’re going to kill Israelis and has sent terrorists to our borders,” he asserted. He concluded by stating that Israel takes steps to mitigate harm to civilians, emphasizing that their only targets are terrorists hiding behind civilian infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
The evolving capabilities of Iran’s missile program and its implications for regional and global security remain a critical area to monitor. The ongoing conflict in Lebanon and the justification for military actions against what is described as a proxy force will continue to draw international attention. Israel’s stated goals of degrading Iran’s nuclear and missile programs suggest a prolonged strategy, the ultimate success and consequences of which are yet to unfold.
