Dem Lawmaker Demands Bondi Testimony on Epstein Files
A newly revealed email from the Jeffrey Epstein files contradicts Donald Trump's claim of banning Epstein from Mar-a-Lago. Congressman Dan Goldman and others are demanding former Florida AG Pam Bondi testify under oath, questioning potential cover-ups by the Justice Department. The House Oversight Committee faces internal divisions as it continues its investigation into Epstein's associates.
Dem Lawmaker Demands Bondi Testimony on Epstein Files
A newly revealed document related to the Jeffrey Epstein case is challenging previous statements made by former President Donald Trump. Congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, recently shared a 2009 email. This email suggests that Epstein was not asked to leave Trump’s Florida property, Mar-a-Lago, for trying to hire Trump’s employees. This contradicts Trump’s earlier claim that he had banned Epstein from the club in 2004.
Accusations of Withheld Information
Goldman accused the Justice Department of intentionally hiding this document. He stated that the email was initially hidden from the public but later unredacted for Congress. “This document here was redacted to the public. It was unredacted to Congress and it completely disputes everything that Donald Trump has said about Jeffrey Epstein,” Goldman said. He questioned what else the Justice Department might be hiding, especially concerning Trump’s alleged involvement.
Congressman Subramanyam Weighs In
Congressman Suha Subramanyam, a member of the House Oversight Committee, joined the discussion. He echoed Goldman’s concerns, suggesting that the Justice Department is withholding critical information not just from the public but also from Congress. “We’re not privy to it because they’re hiding it from us too,” Subramanyam stated. He mentioned that the committee had issued a subpoena in August for documents and that the government was not fully cooperating.
Frustration Over Pam Bondi’s Testimony
The frustration reached a peak when Pam Bondi, a former Florida Attorney General, was scheduled to brief the committee. Democrats, along with some Republicans, had previously voted to subpoena and depose Bondi. However, the briefing turned into a closed-door session. It was conducted without a transcript and Bondi was not under oath. Democrats felt Bondi was avoiding tough questions and had been inconsistent throughout the Epstein investigation.
Push for Subpoena Enforcement
Democrats are pushing to enforce the subpoena for Pam Bondi to testify under oath. They are considering holding her in contempt if she continues to refuse. “We’ve already sent her the subpoena, she knows the date, she knows the time, and so so she can continue to try to avoid that,” Subramanyam explained. He questioned why Bondi would avoid answering tough questions under oath and suggested she might be trying to protect people, but emphasized her duty is to the American people.
Bipartisan Frustration and Committee Dynamics
Despite the Democratic push, the situation has caused friction within the Oversight Committee. Republican Chairman James Comer called the Democrats walking out of a meeting a “low point.” He suggested he might consult with Republicans about excluding Democrats from future proceedings. Subramanyam acknowledged the difficult position for Republicans, as even their constituents are reportedly unhappy with how the Trump-Epstein connection has been handled. “They can continue to try to cut us out of this investigation. They can continue to try to hide and try to protect Pam Bondi,” he said.
Doubts About Epstein’s Associates
The committee is also examining the role of Epstein’s associates. Darren Indyke, Epstein’s longtime lawyer and co-executor of his estate, recently told the committee he had no knowledge of Epstein’s crimes. Indyke claimed he stayed on after Epstein’s 2008 conviction because he believed it was a single mistake. Subramanyam found these statements difficult to believe. He argued that Indyke and Epstein’s accountant were instrumental in creating the infrastructure that allowed Epstein to commit his crimes and profit from them.
Ongoing Investigation
Subramanyam stated that the committee has learned much about how Epstein built his empire and where his accounts were located. They have new questions for new individuals and are committed to continuing the investigation. “If Republicans want to cut us out of it, we will do our own investigating. We’re not going to stop,” he vowed.
What’s Next
The focus now shifts to whether Pam Bondi will comply with the subpoena and testify under oath. The committee’s resolve to uncover the full truth about Epstein’s network and any potential cover-ups will likely be tested. The ongoing investigation aims to bring transparency to the complex web of individuals involved with Jeffrey Epstein and hold those accountable who may have aided or concealed his crimes.
