Oweh’s Half-Court Buzzer-Beater Seals Upset Win!

In a stunning display of clutch performance, Otega Oweh hit a miraculous half-court shot at the buzzer to tie the game and force overtime. The Wildcats, down three with no timeouts left, found themselves in a desperate situation. Denzel Valentine quickly inbounded the ball to Oweh, who raced past half-court. With time evaporating, Oweh launched a prayer from near mid-court, and it banked in, sending the crowd into a frenzy. This incredible shot tied the game at 89-84, a scoreline that reflected a hard-fought battle. Oweh finished the game with an impressive 8 rebounds and 7 assists, contributing significantly to his team’s effort.

‘I Just Let It Fly!’

Speaking after the game, Oweh shared his mindset during that chaotic final possession. “Nah, I ain’t really call bank,” Oweh admitted with a smile. “But you know, I just tried to get it up out my hand once he made the shot.” He emphasized the lack of timeouts and the urgent need for three points. “Denzel, he did a good job of, you know, getting the ball out quick and he got it to me and I was just trying to rush down to, you know, cross half court and get a good shot.” Oweh’s simple, yet powerful, explanation for his game-tying heroics was, “I just knew we had no timeouts and absolutely needed three. So I just let it fly.”

Relentless Resolve Shines Through

The Wildcats’ ability to fight back from dire straits did not go unnoticed. Analyst Jay Bilas praised their resilience, calling them “tougher to kill than a cockroach.” He asked Oweh where this incredible resolve comes from. “I think it’s just, you know, the character of, you know, everybody on the team,” Oweh responded. “We all love this game, we all love playing with each other, and we’re a relentless group.” He explained that the team has faced adversity all season. “We’ve been through the fire since the beginning of the season, so we’ve never had, we never could quit, always had to keep on fighting.” Oweh added that wearing the jersey means playing with an extra chip on your shoulder, a mentality they carry for the full 40 minutes.

A Refreshing Tournament Start

The transition from conference play to the NCAA Tournament brings a new dynamic. Oweh expressed his excitement about playing different teams. “Yeah, it’s awesome. This is the best time of the year,” he said. “When you get to play someone different. Obviously, you spent like two months, you know, playing the same teams in the same conference, and everyone has to scout and stuff like that.” He compared the tournament feel to an AAU event, where teams have limited time to prepare for each opponent. “So, now it’s different. It feels kind of like an AAU tournament if I’m being honest,” Oweh noted. “You get like one day to prep for the next team that you’re playing.” This quick turnaround forces players to lock in even more, providing a welcome break from familiar conference rivals.

Looking Ahead: A Physical Iowa State Challenge

The Wildcats now set their sights on the next challenge: Iowa State. Oweh acknowledged the Cyclones as a formidable opponent. “Obviously, they’re a great team. I’ve played Iowa State a couple times when I was at Oklahoma, so I know exactly how they play,” he stated. “Super physical. Uh, you know, they don’t get tired, that’s what it seems like.” Oweh stressed the importance of sticking to their game plan. “So, we just got to go out there and, you know, stick to our keys, you know, protect the ball and, you know, not get rattled because obviously there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs and there’s going to be um a lot of physicality.” Ultimately, he believes the key to victory will be toughness. “So we just got to go out there and, you know, be the tougher team and, you know, handle the job.” The health of Iowa State’s star, Joshua Jefferson, was also mentioned as a potential factor. The Wildcats hope to face them at full strength, just as they aim to be.

This dramatic victory and Oweh’s incredible shot highlight the unpredictable excitement of March Madness. The Wildcats’ tenacious spirit and Oweh’s clutch gene have them poised for a deep tournament run. Their ability to overcome pressure and adapt to new opponents will be crucial as they continue their journey in what Oweh calls “the best time of the year.”
