Swalwell Slams Trump: More Ballroom Plans Than Middle East Strategy
Congressman Eric Swalwell criticizes Donald Trump's focus, stating the former president has more plans for building a ballroom than for addressing the Middle East conflict and rising economic costs. Swalwell highlights public disapproval of Trump's handling of inflation and points to the impact of the Iran conflict on oil and gas prices. He urges voters to get involved politically and calls for Democrats to outline their future policy plans.
Swalwell Criticizes Trump’s Focus Amidst Economic and Foreign Policy Crises
California Congressman Eric Swalwell has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump’s priorities, arguing that Trump is more focused on building opulent projects like a ballroom than addressing critical economic issues and foreign policy challenges. Swalwell’s remarks, made in a recent interview, highlight a growing concern among Democrats about Trump’s engagement with pressing national and international problems.
Economic Woes Under Trump’s Promises
Swalwell pointed to Trump’s past promises to lower prices on day one of his presidency, a pledge he claims was never fulfilled. “He promised to lower prices on day one, but it was a lie. He couldn’t do it and he didn’t do it,” Swalwell stated. The Congressman highlighted that despite Trump’s claims of economic success, inflation has risen significantly. Reuters reports that a U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, which began in late February, has caused oil prices to surge by more than 40 percent. This surge has directly impacted retail fuel prices, with the average price for a gallon of gas in the United States rising to $3.91, an increase of nearly $1 from the previous month.
Public Disapproval and Market Turmoil
A new Reuters poll indicates that a significant portion of Americans, about 63 percent, disapprove of Donald Trump’s handling of the cost of living. This figure has risen from 41 percent shortly after he returned to the White House. Trump’s approval rate on economic issues has fallen to 29 percent from 35 percent in the early days of his administration. Even the stock market, which Trump often cited as a measure of success, has seen a downturn. CNBC reports that stocks tumbled in volatile trading as the conflict with Iran showed no signs of easing and oil prices continued to climb. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average have experienced their longest weekly losing streaks in years, leaving investors concerned.
“Prices are getting higher and higher, the stock market’s tanking, and understandably, Americans are not happy about any of this.”
— Rep. Eric Swalwell
Trump’s Priorities: Ballrooms Over Foreign Policy
Swalwell contrasted Trump’s focus on economic issues with his alleged preoccupation with personal projects and political retribution. “This is an unserious president,” Swalwell declared, referencing Trump’s reported focus on building a “magnificent ballroom” with gold leaf paint. He criticized Trump for having “more plans for his expansion of the East Wing and the ballroom than for the Middle East.” This, Swalwell argued, is “quite criminal” given the ongoing conflict and its impact on Americans’ daily lives. He noted that Californians he speaks with are concerned about the high cost of groceries and gasoline, issues they feel are being ignored by Trump.
The Iran Conflict and Congressional Response
The Congressman addressed the ongoing conflict with Iran, which Trump has reportedly downplayed as not being a war. Swalwell expressed dismay at this characterization, especially given the reported deaths of 13 servicemen and thousands of other individuals. He stated that Democrats would not fund such conflicts if given the chance. “We shouldn’t fund a penny of it,” he asserted. Swalwell believes that if Democrats win in the upcoming midterms, they will have more power through fiscal control and oversight to investigate potential “dirty deals” and corruption within the administration, particularly by those profiting from the war.
Empowering Voters and Future Political Strategy
Swalwell also urged citizens to take action, encouraging participation in events like the “No Kings Rally” to send a message to elected officials. He emphasized that public sentiment matters and can influence policy. For young voters participating in their first election, Swalwell advised more than just registering to vote; he encouraged getting involved in local politics, holding officials accountable, and examining the entire ballot, not just the top of the ticket. He stressed that voting is the most empowering act, allowing citizens to have expectations of those they put in power. Democrats, he added, should clearly communicate their plans for when they are in office, such as not funding wars and developing a long-term vision like “Project 2029” to motivate and empower voters.
