Federal Judges Reveal Alarming Threats, Fear for Safety

Four federal judges from across the United States have spoken out about the serious threats and intimidation they have faced simply for doing their jobs. These judges, appointed by both Republican and Democratic presidents, described receiving death threats, being doxxed, and experiencing other forms of harassment. This comes as inflammatory language directed at the judiciary continues to rise.

“I Hope You Lose Your Life”: The Reality of Judicial Threats

The judges shared chilling examples of the threats they have endured. One judge recounted a message saying, “I hope you lose your life by lunchtime, you worthless.” Another judge revealed that a previous incident involved a law clerk being shot. The judges also spoke about being doxxed, meaning their personal information like where they live and what they drive was shared online, putting them and their families at risk.

Social Media Fuels Judicial Intimidation

While the judges did not directly name specific politicians, they pointed to the pervasive nature of social media as a major factor fueling this hostility. Online platforms have become a space where people feel emboldened to post dangerous messages. Examples cited included calls to “Hang the We need to start lynching judges.” This level of personal attack and threat was something many judges had not anticipated when entering public service.

“People on social media felt free to post things like, ‘Hang the We need to start lynching judges.’ It had never really occurred to me that these kinds of things uh happened uh with respect to judges and litigants or people who disagreed with the decisions that judges make.”

Statistics Show Disturbing Increase in Threats

The threats against federal judges are not isolated incidents. The U.S. Marshals Service, responsible for protecting federal judges, reported a significant increase in investigations. Since October, they have investigated 314 threats made against 202 judges. This alarming trend prompted Chief Justice John Roberts to publicly ask people to stop the personal attacks.

Chief Justice Urges an End to Hostility

Chief Justice Roberts emphasized that while criticism of judicial opinions is a normal part of the legal process, direct personal hostility is dangerous and must end. He stated, “Judges around the country work very hard uh to get it right. Um and if they don’t, their opinions are subject to criticism, but u personally directed hostility um is is dangerous and it’s got to stop.”

Security Measures Increase, But Concerns Remain

In response to the growing threats, Congress has approved increased funding for judicial security. A request for $892 million was approved, a 19% increase from the previous year’s budget. This funding is intended to enhance the safety of federal judges and courthouses. However, despite these measures, the judges who spoke out remain concerned about the ongoing climate of intimidation.

Public Education Key to Protecting the Judiciary

The judges believe that public education is crucial in combating the spread of misinformation and hostility towards the courts. They urged citizens to help correct misunderstandings about the judicial system. “If one of your friends or family members speak is talking and talking about judges being political and that’s a problem, you know, politely just say, ‘Yeah, actually that’s not how the system is set up.'” The judges stressed that most federal judges are dedicated to upholding the Constitution and ensuring fair decisions.

Looking Ahead: A Call for Respect

The continued threats against federal judges highlight a serious challenge to the independence and integrity of the judicial system. As public discourse becomes more polarized, the safety of those tasked with interpreting the law remains a critical concern. The hope is that increased awareness and respectful dialogue can help reverse this dangerous trend and ensure the judiciary can function without fear of reprisal.
