Unidentified drones have been spotted hovering over Fort McNair, a U.S. military installation in Washington D.C. The base is home to high-ranking officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin. The Washington Post reported that a Trump administration official noted increased military attention to potential threats. This heightened alert comes amid ongoing U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Over the past ten days, multiple drones were observed over the base each night. This prompted security upgrades and a White House meeting to discuss further actions. Sources indicated that officials considered relocating Blinken and Austin due to the drone activity. However, a Trump administration official confirmed the ministers have not moved. Their residences had been mentioned in media reports back in October.

These sightings in Washington occurred as the United States declared a global threat level for overseas diplomatic missions. Security measures were also strengthened at several U.S. bases. This included Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey and MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. The security level was raised to “Charlie.” This indicates the military has intelligence about a possible attack or danger. The highest level, “Delta,” is reserved for situations where an attack has already occurred or is imminent.

U.S. Mulls Troop Surge in Middle East

The Trump administration is considering deploying thousands of additional U.S. troops to the Middle East. Reuters reports that preparations are underway for potential actions against Iran. This deployment could offer President Donald Trump more options as the conflict with Iran enters its third week. Options reportedly include ensuring the safe passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. This would primarily involve air and naval forces.

However, securing the strait could also mean placing U.S. troops on Iran’s coast. Trump’s team has also discussed sending ground troops to Iran’s Khark Island. This island is central to 90% of Iran’s oil exports. U.S. officials acknowledge this operation would be very risky. Iran possesses the capability to strike the island with missiles and drones.

Additionally, discussions included deploying U.S. troops to secure Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. Experts believe securing these stockpiles would be extremely difficult and dangerous, even for U.S. special forces. A White House representative stated that no decision has been made regarding ground troop deployment. However, President Trump is reportedly keeping all options open.

A White House spokesperson outlined the key objectives of “Operation Epic Fury.” These goals include destroying Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities, crippling its navy, and preventing its proxies from destabilizing the region. A primary aim is ensuring Iran can never obtain a nuclear weapon.

Oman Criticizes U.S. Involvement in Iran Conflict

Oman has voiced criticism of U.S. involvement in the conflict with Iran. Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Al-Busaidi, stated that Washington has entered a conflict that doesn’t serve its national interests. He believes there is no scenario where the U.S. can achieve victory. Al-Busaidi called the U.S. administration’s decision to engage in the war a significant miscalculation.

The diplomat emphasized that this is not a war that benefits America. He also noted that there is no plausible outcome where both Israel and the U.S. achieve their desired results. Al-Busaidi believes this situation highlights a loss of control over U.S. foreign policy. He stated that Israel’s strategic goals, particularly regime change in Tehran, do not align with U.S. interests. Achieving such a goal, he argued, would require a large-scale military campaign involving U.S. ground forces. This would likely lead to prolonged and unending conflicts.

To resolve the crisis, Oman urges the U.S. and Iran to return to negotiations. Al-Busaidi proposed combining these talks with a broader regional agreement on non-aggression and control over nuclear technologies. The joint military operation against Iran, dubbed “Epic Fury,” began on February 28th. President Trump cited the failure of nuclear deal negotiations as the reason for its launch.

Iran Strikes Qatar’s LNG Facility Again

Iran has again targeted Qatar with ballistic missiles. The world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex in Ras Laffan was hit. This attack occurred less than 12 hours after a previous strike. CNN reported a fire broke out at the strategic facility. Qatar’s Interior Ministry stated that air defense forces intercepted most of the missiles. However, one missile reached its target, striking an energy infrastructure area.

Emergency services responded quickly and contained the blaze. Qatar Energy, a state company, confirmed the attack and reported significant damage. No casualties were reported, and all personnel were accounted for as safe. The Qatar Interior Ministry indicated that Iran launched several ballistic missiles, with most being intercepted.

Ras Laffan is a major global center for liquefied gas. An attack on this facility could impact the global energy market. This strike occurred amid a significant escalation in the Middle East. Iran has been regularly targeting regional sites during the conflict with the U.S. and Israel. Qatar has condemned the attack and reserved its right to respond. A previous attack on the same facility occurred just 12 hours earlier. On March 2nd, Iranian drones also struck Qatar Energy facilities in Ras Laffan.

In response to the missile strike on the LNG complex, Qatar announced it would expel Iranian ambassadors. They were given 24 hours to leave the country. Saudi Arabia is also preparing a response after its oil facilities were hit by missiles. The ongoing conflict is also impacting diplomatic efforts elsewhere.

Ukraine-Russia Talks Delayed by Middle East Tensions

Trilateral talks between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine have been postponed. The delay is attributed to the current situation in the Middle East. A Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed that the war in Iran is negatively affecting the negotiation track for Ukraine and Russia. The next trilateral consultations have been postponed multiple times but not canceled.

The spokesperson explained that the U.S. is currently fully focused on the Middle East, leading to the hold-up in negotiations. While working-level contacts continue daily, progress requires high-level meetings, ideally between leaders. Ukraine maintains that a leaders’ meeting could unblock the peace process. However, they have not seen readiness from the Russian side for such a meeting or for diplomacy in general. Ukraine observes Russia relying on military means to achieve its goals, a strategy they believe will ultimately fail.

The spokesperson added that any updates on new talks would be reported. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin stated that no specific date or location for a new meeting has been set. The agenda also remains unfinalized. He identified the territorial issue as a primary concern.

Russia Plans Major Troop Recruitment Drive

Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported that Russia plans to recruit an additional 409,000 troops in 2026. He stated this indicates the enemy has not abandoned its intentions and continues preparations for further aggression against Ukraine. Syrskyi noted that enemy activity on the front lines is increasing with improving weather conditions.

He recently held an operational meeting focused on strengthening defensive lines. Key tasks include reinforcing fortifications, developing anti-drone defenses, and preparing settlements for defense. Syrskyi highlighted that the stability of defenses and the lives of soldiers depend on the quality and speed of this work.

Recent reports suggest that growing Russian losses could hinder plans for a large-scale offensive against Ukraine. Ukraine’s Deputy Head of the Presidential Office suggested Russia may be forced to resume mobilization if political or peace negotiations stall. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War believe Russian President Putin is creating conditions for a phased conscription of reservists to compensate for war losses.

China has urged its citizens living in Russia to exercise caution due to a new conscription law. This law obliges foreigners to serve in the Russian army.
