Toby Fournier Soars Past Social Star Hype at Duke
Duke sophomore Toby Fournier isn’t just the “Canadian that can dunk.” She’s proving she’s a complete basketball player, leading the Blue Devils with an all-around game that has her team aiming for a Final Four run.
From Social Media Sensation to College Star
You might know Toby Fournier from viral videos of her incredible dunks. But since arriving at Duke, the 6’2″ sophomore from Toronto has shown she’s much more than just a social media star. Everything runs through her on the court. “My siblings were doing it, and I just kind of went to the building that they were training at, and they were like, ‘Who is that?'” Fournier recalled about her early basketball days. By age 14, she was dunking, a rare feat for any player, especially a female. She even had LeBron James acknowledge her dunking ability before she reached college. “The coaches were kind of just like, ‘She’s the girl. She can dunk,'” Fournier said. “And he was like, ‘Yeah, like I saw that.'”
Duke Coach Saw More Than Dunks
Duke head coach Kara Lawson recognized Fournier’s potential beyond the highlight reels during the recruiting process. “The thing that stood out about Toby during the recruiting process was her production,” Lawson explained. “Whether it was for her high school, whether it was for her club team, whether it was for her national team, Team Canada, she would find a way to score, she would find a way to rebound, she would find a way to block shots.” Lawson added, “I think she’s been able to carry that over into the collegiate space as well.”
Adjusting to the College Game
Arriving at Duke in 2024, Fournier faced the challenge of adjusting to college life and Division I basketball, especially in a new country. “Going to university in general, not even playing Division I basketball, is really hard, especially in another country,” she admitted. Her freshman year brought tough competition and physicality that tested her. “It was definitely difficult because there was so much coming at me against the harder competition. It was just a lot of physicality. They would take away my strengths, and I didn’t really know how to deal with it,” Fournier said. Despite these early challenges, she averaged 13 points per game, earned First Team All-ACC honors, and helped Duke reach the Elite Eight.
An Evolving All-Around Game
Now as a sophomore, Fournier’s game has transformed. “I think that my game is just it’s evolving and changing. There’s a lot that she’s growing into as a player,” Lawson observed. Fournier has expanded her offensive game, becoming a threat from beyond the three-point line. “She’s hitting more three-point shots. She’s playing a little bit more out on the perimeter to attack,” Lawson noted. Fournier herself added, “Last year I was like I was a little bit scared to shoot. There was a lot of fans, a lot of attention, and I didn’t want to mess up a shot, but now I shoot threes whenever I’m open.” Her improved shooting was on full display, hitting threes with confidence.
Elite on Both Ends of the Court
Fournier’s development has been remarkable. “I love the development of Toby Fournier’s game. The details and her fundamentals are a lot better from a year ago,” Lawson stated. This season, her stats are up across the board, making her one of the nation’s top players. She’s become a complete two-way player, excelling on offense and defense. “Toby’s a complete two-way player. She’s elite on offense and she’s elite on defense,” Lawson said. “So, there’s a lot about her athleticism that’s great. The most famous part of it is obviously the leaping ability.” Yet, her impact now goes far beyond her famous vertical leap.
Championship Aspirations
With Fournier leading the charge, Duke is considered a strong contender for a championship. “This is a team that is primed for a run at the Final Four,” Lawson stated. Fournier shares the team’s high expectations. “We have a lot of potential to make a deep run. If we stick to our core values and what we’ve been doing throughout our conference play, I think that we can be in the run for a championship,” she said. Her passion for the game is evident every time she steps on the court. “I just love to play basketball. When I’m out there, you can see that,” Fournier concluded, her actions speaking louder than any social media post.
